Condition: Fair

Description: Six volumes, edited by Benjamin Franklin's grandson. Original blue and gray cardboard as issued (owner could then bind as he chose). Bookplates of Frederick J. Edlmann of Hawkwood to each of the six volumes. Volume one shows missing paper to spine, the rest show shelf-rubbing to spine-caps, and a very few short external tears. Internally very clean copy. Fold-out diagrams of scientific apparatus, and a map, in sixth volume. Includes the complete account of Franklin's own Autobiography, the premier American classic. William Temple Franklin inherited the papers, but failed to publish them for so long, he was accused of a cover-up on behalf of powerful British figures. He denies this in the introduction, but seems to have delayed publishing nevertheless until everyone was dead. Some little known treasures of Franklin therein, an example being a dialogue or legal undertaking between Franklin the accused, and Gout, the accuser.
