SASSOON, Siegfried.. Memoirs of an Infantry Officer. With Illustrations by Barnett Freedman.. London: Faber & Faber Limited, 1931, 1931.

Price: US$384.98 + shipping

Description: First illustrated edition, first impression, also the finest illustrated edition, with Barnett Freedman's splendid autolithographic colour plates. This "responsive medium [gave] full scope to his fluent graphic abilities, and he soon acquired an outstanding command of the technique. Encouraged by Harold Curwen, he developed a method of simulating lithography by drawing in chalk for line block reproduction" (Peppin & Micklethwait, p. 112). This semi-autobiographical novel was recognized as a classic of First World War fiction upon its original publication, in an unillustrated edition, the previous year. "Like Tolstoy's War and Peace, which he was also reading while he wrote his own book, it is the combination of factual detail and direct personal experience vividly rendered that makes Infantry Officer a convincing and compelling picture of war. As he told Ottoline [Morrell], he wanted to give 'a really truthful inner-narrative'. He believed that this had not yet been achieved by an English writer, apart from Blunden" (Wilson, p. 238). The work is the second title in Sassoon's trilogy, which opened with Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man (1928) and concluded with Sherston's Progress (1937) Keynes A33d. Brigid Peppin & Lucy Micklethwait, Dictionary of British Book Illustrators: The Twentieth Century, 1983; Jean Moorcroft Wilson, Siegfried Sassoon: The Journey from the Trenches, 2003. Octavo. Original illustrated red cloth lettered in black, colour pictorial endpapers, top edge sprinkled red, other edges uncut. With dust jacket. Colour frontispiece and 14 similar plates, line drawings in the text. Publisher's mailing card loosely inserted. Bumps to edges, contents clean and lightly creased; jacket spine sunned, else bright, 2 cm chip to spine head, smaller chips and punctures elsewhere, with loss of text, old tape reinforcements on verso, unclipped: a very good copy in good jacket.
