Description: Heavy surface and edge wear to the cover. The corners have been bumped. The boards are beginning to show in the corners. There are a few small tears in the corners of the spine. There's soiling and discoloration to the cover. The gold lettering on the cover is still vibrant, but the lettering on the spine has almost completely faded. The first twelve pages have come out (but are still included); the next thirty are coming lose; and the rest of the pages are secure. Pages all show reader wear and are beginning to yellow. Pages have some water waving/staining. The netting is showing on the inside of the front and back cover. Stock photos may not look exactly like the book.

Description: SIGNED. 341pp. Octavo [20 cm] Dark blue cloth with gilt stamped titles on the front board and backstrip. Illustrated with a frontis portrait of the author. The boards are subtly stained, and the pages are darkened. Flake/Draper 10081. Howes Y29. John Ray Young (1837-) was a nephew of Brigham Young. He was born in Kirtland, Ohio, to parents who were early followers of Joseph Smith. His father suffered greatly in the Missouri persecutions, being one of those who participated in the Crooked River Battle. John R. Young arrived in Salt Lake with the Jedediah M. Grant Company in October of 1847. He later served as company chaplain, as well as captaining a couple of his own companies assisting emigrants over the plains. Inscribed by John R. Young to Anton H. Lund, on a piece of paper that has been mounted to the front pastedown. The slip states, "Presented to President Anton H. Lund, in timidity- (?) that the little book will be interesting to you. And that Peace and Happiness will ever smile upon your path. Your brother, John R. Young." Anton Henrik Lund (1884-1921) was called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1889, and in 1890 he succeeded Franklin D. Richards as Church Historian. Later, he served as First Counselor to two Presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joseph F. Smith and Heber J. Grant.
