Moore, George. Memoirs of My Dead Life. Boni & Liveright, New York, 1920.

Price: US$45.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: New York: Boni & Liveright, 1920. George Moore (1852-1933), influenced by Zola, himself would influence Joyce and be both friend and foe to his compatriots of the Irish Literary Renaissance. Originally published in 1906, this is the "Author's Edition" privately printed for subscribers by Liveright and LIMITED to 1500 copies. A Very Good copy, following the design adopted by Moore for his limited editions: large octavos, with greenish-blue paper boards and vellum spines. The vellum is rather fragile and tends to show the soil; this copy has survived rather well, showing mild bumps, some wear to the margins of the spine, and rubbing to the leather label. Clean text; 208 pages, many unopened. Previous-owner signature (1934) on FFEP; opposite on the front past-down is a rather attractive art deco label in gold that has offset a bit. All in all, a presentable copy. No dustjacket; in an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Limited/Numbered. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Provenance: sold Christie's New York, 15 October 1997, lot 278. Second American ("Author's") edition, revised and expanded, limited to 1500 numbered copies (this no. 154). The dedication copy, inscribed by the author on a front flyleaf: "To T R Smith with many kind regards, George Moore, March 30th 1921. " Thomas Smith was the head editor at Boni and Liveright and a literary advisor to Moore at this time.; he had previously been the editor of the 'Century Magazine' and had acted as Moore's agent in America (see W. Gilmer, 'Horace Liveright', 1970, pp. 25 & 29).
