The press focused primarily on subjects related to California. Notable publications include their first, Lola Montez: The Mid-Victorian Bad Girl in California, by Oscar Lewis (1938) ; Kamehameha, King of the Hawaiian Islands, by Marie Louise Burke (1939) , which was chosen as one of the fifty "Books of the Year" by the American Institute of Graphic Arts; and McTeague: A Story of San Francisco, by Frank Norris (1941). Grabhorn set the type for the press and worked without pay during most of this period. Although she attempted to continue operating the Colt Press single-handedly after Roth left to join the Office of War Information in 1942, the press was forced to close." (from Wikipedia)

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A very good copy. Reprint edition. Limited to 500 copies issued by Jane Grabhorn and William Matson Roth. Zamorano Eighty 58: "Many literary critics, including Henry L. Mencken, regard McTeague as the greatest of all American novels. While the story is a sordid one, involving the life and loves and mercenary instincts of an unlicensed San Francisco dentist, it contains some masterly descriptions of California's most glamorous city. The book is particularly significant because it marks the first appearance in the United States of realistic fiction of the genre produced by Emile Zola, Maupassant, Stendhal and other European writers." Johnson, High Spots of American Literature p. 60. Powell, California Classics pp. 175-184.

NORRIS, Frank. McTeague: A Story of San Francisco. The Colt Press, San Francisco, 1941.

Price: US$175.00 + shipping

Description: Introduction by Charles G. Norris. Illustrations by Otis Oldfield. Small 4to. Quarter vellum with gilt spine lettering and blue patterned paper over bevelled boards. (5pp), 390pp. Line drawings, marbled endpapers. Near fine. Choice copy of this first thus, being a reprint of the grim 1899 fiction about an unlicensed dentist who goes amuck, here introduced by Norris's younger brother and with illustrations. A sexual incident that happens to young August ("Owgooste") at an opera in chapter six so incensed some critics that Norris was forced to rewrite one small section near the end of that chapter in later printings -- but in this edition the original text has been restored. Ironically, in his introduction brother Charles mistakenly notes that "the much criticised episode is included in its original form and may be found at the end of Chapter IV" -- of all the typos! -- and some early owner of this volume circles this wrong Roman numeral in pencil and adds "VI." Rear colophon notes 500 copies "Issued by Jane Grabhorn and William Matson Roth Publishers and Designers" -- and this copy elegantly custom bound in lovely quarter vellum with gilt spine lettering and striking marbled endpapers (the regular edition being brown buckram spine with paper label and paisley print paper over boards).
