Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel). McElligot's Pool. Random House, New York, 1947.

Price: US$300.00 + shipping

Description: I believe this to be a very early printing: publisher's green cloth, with a closed-mouth fish on the cover and a three-line copyright statement with 1947 the only date stated. You can see the covers in the photos. They are pretty clean, a bit of light soiling. There's a shallow groove above the front bottom corner. There are a few penned jags on the rear cover. There's also a small loss on the rear side of the spine just off the bottom edge. There is a tear (perhaps mended/glued at some point) on the front side of the spine. There's also rub-through at both spine ends. There is rub-through at all four corners and there is rubbing at the edges. The black lettering on the front and spine is quite bright. The book is pretty square and it is solidly bound from cover to cover. I'm not seeing any cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages or between the covers and end papers. The front cover creaks a tiny bit when you open it wide. The inside covers and end papers form the same color illustration. The pages are in nice condition. They are quite clean. I saw only a few inconspicuous tiny spots. The illustrations are alternately in black & white and in color. They all appear to be in excellent condition. There is a tiny tip of the bottom corner crease on most of the pages. There isn't much else by way of creasing. There is a small tear at the top edge of the rear inside cover, above where the illustration begins. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The title is in red lettering on the title page. The author's name is in blue lettering on the title page. 'McElligot's Pool is a children's book written and illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name Dr. Seuss and published by Random House in 1947. In the story, a boy named Marco, who first appeared in Geisel's 1937 book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, imagines a wide variety of strange fish that could be swimming in the pond in which he is fishing. Geisel painted some of the water colors that illustrate McElligot's Pool while vacationing with his wife, Helen, at the summer home of their friend Kelvin Vanderlip, in southern California. The book was the first Dr. Seuss book to use watercolors for its illustrations; however, because of budget concerns, Random House published half of the book in black and white, alternating between two pages in color and two pages in black and white. McElligot's Pool, Geisel's first book in seven years, was published by Random House in 1947 and was well received. It became a Junior Literary Guild selection and garnered Geisel his first Caldecott Honor. The review in the Saturday Review of Literature stated, "Children will have nothing but admiration for this boy who heard there were no fish in McElligot's Pool and then saw them swimming in from the sea." M.B. King of the Chicago Sun emphasized the book's humor, writing, "This time prepare to chuckle under water for you'll be meeting the weirdest, wildest, funniest creatures of the sea which imagination can conjur." S.J. Johnson of Library Journal called the book "as diviniely idiotic" as And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.'

This first edition has the original material which resulted in the recent decision of the Seuss estate to cease further publication of the book. However, even the most censorial reader will be hard pressed to find anything in the book that could be considered objectionable, much less racist. Still, bound to be a collectible artifact forever for this artist, probably the most popular creator of illustrated children's books in history, at least based on books sold, read and reread, and enjoyed by children discovering the joy of reading.

Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel). McElligot's Pool. Random House, New York, 1947.

Price: US$930.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Christmas 1953 gift inscription to half-title page; otherwise no dates showing save for 1947 copyright. There's nothing wrong with the condition of this book (save some modest rub to board corners); we grade it "good-plus" simply because the binding is no longer tight enough to snap the text block shut. The "very good" jacket shows some rub to tops of folds, and a 1/4-inch closed tear to top right of front panel. Not price clipped; "250/250" price showing. Mouth closed on fish to jacket front panel, fish's mouth closed to (dark blue) front board, mouth open on endpapers. This is one of the five classic Dr. Seuss titles which the Politically Correct successors who control the Geisel/Dr. Seuss estate have announced they will no longer reprint, alleging that the author (1904-1991, whose publication of this book was delayed from 1941 to 1947 due to his wartime service in the U.S. armed forces) drew cartoons (40 to 90 years ago) which caricatured members of non-white races (especially the Japanese) in ways now judged demeaning. That is their right, of course. But see Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking" for documentation and photos of Japanese soldiers using Chinese civilians for bayonet practice, posing next to rows of heads chopped off Chinese civilians, raping Chinese women, turning hundreds (if not thousands) of conquered Korean women into unwilling whores in their officially authorized "comfort houses." Research their use of American, English, and Australian POWs for slave labor in Burma and elsewhere when not purposely starving them to death, torturing them, or cutting off their heads -- not to mention the Bataan Death March -- and then feel free to get back to us on how Americans who were not yet born should today hang our heads in shame over the fact that our grandparents -- fighting for their lives and for the freedom of the world from racist, militarist tyranny -- drew cartoons which failed to make the Japanese look sufficiently noble and upstanding. We don't suppose the Japanese at that time were drawing any demeaning cartoons which ridiculed the English and Americans? Meantime 1) How many of these facts are now taught to Japanese children, so they'll fully understand the relevant history? 2) How is anyone to learn any lessons from history, if that history is systematically erased by these sniveling Woketards? and 3) This book contains a very small cartoon of a "tropical" man fanning himself (he wears a hat and appears to have a mustache. Could he be meant to represent a "Mexican"? Oh, the horror!) Both he and a tiny "Tibetan" with a white beard look thoroughly Caucasian, as does the Eskimo. No offensively caricatured "people of color" No "Orientals." But if the shrunken and diminished heirs of an artist who sought only to amuse now want to cower at shadows and artificially create new rarities, we're happy to supply them to those who remain sane. Unpaginated but 50 pp., now reduced from $1,295.

Seuss, Dr. [Theodor Geisel]. McElligot's Pool.. Random House, New York, 1947.

Price: US$4500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition with the 250/250 price on the front flap as well as the $2.50 price added to the rear flap (state 'c') of the first Dr. Seuss title to feature full-color art on every other page. Quarto, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated throughout. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "For Mrs. Haye with very kindest regards- Dr. Seuss." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. Uncommon signed and inscribed. The story begins as a boy named Marco fishes in a small, trash-filled pond, McElligot's Pool. A local farmer laughs at the boy and tells him that he is never going to catch anything. Nevertheless, Marco holds out hope and begins to imagine a scenario in which he might be able to catch a fish. First, he suggests that the pool might be fed by an underground brook that travels under a highway and a hotel to reach the sea. Marco then imagines a succession of fish and other creatures that could be in the sea and therefore the pool. He imagines, among others, a fish with a checkerboard stomach, a seahorse with the head of an actual horse, and an eel with two heads. When Marco is done imagining, he tells the farmer, "Oh, the sea is a so full of a number of fish,/ If a fellow is patient, he might get his wish!" Geisel painted some of the water colors that illustrate McElligot's Pool while vacationing with his wife, Helen, at the summer home of their friend Kelvin Vanderlip, in southern California. The book was the first Dr. Seuss book to use water colors for its illustrations; however, because of budget concerns, Random House published half of the book in black and white, alternating between two pages in color and two pages in black and white. It became a Junior Literary Guild selection and garnered Dr. Seuss his first Caldecott Honor.
