H. Ehmcke, in original illustrated lemon chrome dustjacket with black lettering on spine; housed in dark blue cloth-covered boards box portfolio with string-button fasteners. Frontispiece original etching with printed tissue guard: "Frauenbildnis mit aufgestützten Armen und Glas (Woman's Portrait with Propped Arms and Glass)." Title page with publisher's device and printed in orange and black. Fifty-two full page photoengravings with tissue guards of Beckmann's work and 16 in-text drawings by Beckmann, reproduced in heliotype. The major monograph on Max Beckmann's work with contributions by distinguished German art historians and art critics on Beckmann and his work, Curt Glaser, Julius Meier-Graefe, Wilhelm Hausenstein and Wilhelm Fraenger, focusing on the "physiognomy of the grotesque" in Beckmann's work. Though the term Expressionism as well as the movement was always rejected by Max Beckmann himself he is considered and classified as the foremost German Expressionist. In the 1920s Beckmann associated himself with the movement of the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). Contains register of Beckmann's important paintings, a register of his graphics and a list of plates at end of text part. Laid in a one-page advertisement of Beckmann's artwork published by R. Piper & Co. Text in German. Dustjacket with light wear along edges, small closed tear and chips and some light staining at upper left corner of back cover; spine lightly sunned. Tissue guard of etching at front with vertical crease and one inch closed tear at bottom edge. Text with one line underlined on pages 64 and 65. Back endpaper and text page lightly wavy due to water exposure. Portfolio in fine, dustacket in good+, binding and interior in near fine, plates in fine condition.
