H. Ehmcke, in original illustrated lemon chrome dustjacket with black lettering on spine; housed in dark blue cloth-covered boards box portfolio with string-button fasteners. Frontispiece original etching with printed tissue guard: "Frauenbildnis mit aufgestützten Armen und Glas (Woman's Portrait with Propped Arms and Glass)." Title page with publisher's device and printed in orange and black. Fifty-two full page photoengravings with tissue guards of Beckmann's work and 16 in-text drawings by Beckmann, reproduced in heliotype. The major monograph on Max Beckmann's work with contributions by distinguished German art historians and art critics on Beckmann and his work, Curt Glaser, Julius Meier-Graefe, Wilhelm Hausenstein and Wilhelm Fraenger, focusing on the "physiognomy of the grotesque" in Beckmann's work. Though the term Expressionism as well as the movement was always rejected by Max Beckmann himself he is considered and classified as the foremost German Expressionist. In the 1920s Beckmann associated himself with the movement of the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit).
