Price: US$240.00 + shipping

Description: small 4to. paper-covered boards, dust jacket. (vi), 206 pages. Printed in an edition limited to 800 copies, this being one of 715 trade copies. Matrix is the longest surviving and probably the last typographical journal to be printed by letterpress. It is an eclectic mix of fine printing, type design, and small press lore, forming a record of events and personalities whose memory would otherwise have died with their recorders. It is no exaggeration to say that in the future it will be impossible to research fine printing without reference to Matrix. This issue contains twenty-five articles and additional book reviews, including: "Fine Press and the Bookbinder" by Anthony Dowd, "The Forgotten Pleasure of Hand-Printing" by Miriam MacGregor, "Working with Olive Cook" by Lucy Archer, "My Concatenation of Types," by Michael Caine, "Latterday Letterpress Printer" by Dennis Gould, and "Aspects of Golden Gockerel" by Simon Lawrence. Illustrated throughout with many tipped-in specimens on special paper, engravings, photographs, color plates, etc. and a 1937 Matisse, "Woman's Head," as frontispiece. paper-covered boards, dust jacket

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Hardcover. Number 8 of 85 copies of the deluxe edition. There were 800 total copies printed including 715 copies of the regular edition. This is one of the special copies of the annual publication of Matrix, one of the foremost publications on the book arts during its 36 year existence. Sadly, Matrix 36, published in 2020, was the last annual edition of the Matrix series. After 36 years, Whittington Press owners, John and Rose Randle, decided to discontinue producing this fine annual for printers and bibliophiles on the book arts that compiled articles, illustrations, paper and typography samples and book reviews. This issue includes a number of articles by such well-known bibliophiles and book artists as Marianne Tidcombe, William Peterson, John Randle, Roderick Cave, David McKitterick, Stan Nelson, and Crispin Elsted. Interspersed throughout are photographs, printing samples, and illustrations. Inserted in a back pocket is the prospectus for this volume. Quarter bound in brown Oasis leather with brown and cream marbled boards. Letterpress printed in Caslon, Cochin, and Bell & Romulus types on Somerville Laid and Hahnemühle papers. The deluxe copy includes a separate green paper covered folder with a facsimile of the 1920 Klingspor calendar printed from polymer plates by John Grice. Both volume and folder are housed in a green stiff board folder. In fine condition. Matrix volume and folder measure 8 x 11 inches. BOB/102621.
