Child, Julia; Beck, Simone; Bertholle, Louisette. Mastering the Art of French Cooking - Two Volume Set. Alfred A. Knopf, 1970.

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Two volume set; volume two is a first edition. Dust jackets have previously been taped to the books, resulting in sticker ghosts along top and bottom edges of boards, and facing/transfer sticker ghosts along top and bottom edges of free endpapers, for both volumes. The tape has been removed and its ability to further affect the books eliminated; it is not removed from DJs. Boards of both books otherwise have only light shelf-wear. Exterior surfaces of both dust jackets have been completely covered in laminate/tape, in addition to the pieces of tape at inner flaps which previously attached them to books. Jackets are now housed in an additional layer of (removable) Mylar, mostly to protect the books from any continuing affect of the tape that remains on the DJs. Both jackets had tape repairs reinforcing closed tears underneath the full laminate, more to volume one than volume two. Jackets in poor condition. Red topstain to volume one, blue to volume two; light spatter to both. Prior owner's name stamped to front paste down of volume one, FFEP of volume two, and to half title of both volumes; gift inscriptions to FFEP of both volumes; brief recipe notes penned to RFEP of volume one. Interiors else clean, the texts of the recipes themselves unmarked. This is a multiple-volume set, and may require additional postage to ship.

It breaks down the classic cuisine into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of recipes; the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations bound to increase anyone's culinary repertoire. Over 7.25" x 10.25" design. 555 pages plus 54-page index and Note about Authors. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
