BRADBURY, Ray.. The Martian Chronicles. With an introduction by Martin Gardner.. Avon, Connecticut: Limited Editions Club, 1974, 1974.

Price: US$649.77 + shipping

Description: Signed limited edition, number 529 of 2,000 copies signed by the author and illustrator. This edition is the first to feature the complete text alongside illustrations from Mugnaini, Bradbury's long-term collaborator. Bradbury's short Martian tales were originally published in magazines. He decided to fuse them together into his first novel by means of short chapters which provided links between the heavily revised stories. The first edition of The Martian Chronicles was published in 1950 and included 15 stories, but did not feature "The Fire Balloons" or "The Wilderness". These two additional stories were published together with the other fifteen for the first time in 1963. For this volume, the Limited Editions Club used the definitive text of all 17 stories and commissioned Mugnaini to provide vibrant illustrations. Quarto. Original silver-speckled black cloth, titles to spine in silver, matching endpapers, edges sprinkled black. With the original matching slipcase. With 12 colour lithographic plates and illustrations to text by Joseph Mugnaini. Slipcase label rubbed at head; a fine copy in a near-fine slipcase.

This printing is sumptuously illustrated with eleven color lithographs by Mugnaini and additional black and white illustrations at the chapter headings and within the text. The Martian Chronicles is a 1950 collection of science fiction short stories by Ray Bradbury and his first published book. The stories chronicle the repeated attempts of humans to colonize Mars. Forced to flee a devastated Earth, the conflict between the new colonists and the aboriginal Martians is told through interwoven stories of colonization and exploration. The book lies somewhere between a short story collection and an episodic novel, containing several stories Bradbury first published in science fiction magazines throughout the 1940s. The Martian Chronicles established Bradbury’s reputation and was lauded as a popular and critical success. For the introduction to this Limited Editions Club edition, Martin Gardner wrote: "Critics have said it is Bradbury's best book because there is more science in it than in his other books. I believe the opposite to be true. That is not a weakness. That is why, long after Mars has become a hearth to us, The Martian Chronicles will keep on stirring imaginations, arousing laughter and tears, and haunting the minds of those who have not forgotten how to read."
