Description: NEW book is beautifully bound in green top grain leather with gilt blind stamps and gilt spine lettering and a silk page marker tipped in. Book has never been opened. The illustrations by Barbara Fox are very fine. Updike has called his novel Marry Me, a romance. It would seem, at first, an ironic description; the story takes place in a world ill designed for romance: the world of Greenwood, Connecticut, ringed by shopping malls, car pools, and the trappings of suburbia. Beautiful book, fine read in NEW condition and a fine addition to any library. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Special Edition

Description: Limited First Edition. Bound in full leather. Stamped with 22kt gold gilt design on cover front, back and spine. All edges gold. Silk moire fabric end papers. Satin ribbon place holder. Fine binding and cover. Clean, unmarked pages. For more than 30 years, the Franklin Library has been the standard for finely bound, profusely gilt classic leather bindings. "From one of the most gifted American writers of the twentieth century, and the author of the acclaimed Rabbit series: a novel set in 1962 in Greenwood, Connecticut, where Jerry Conant and Sally Mathias are in love and want to get married, though they already are married to others. A diadem of five symmetrical chapters describes the course of their affair as it flickers off and on, and as their spouses react, in a tentative late-summer atmosphere of almost-last chances. For this is, as Jerry observes, 'the twilight of the old morality, and there’s just enough to torment us, and not enough to hold us in.'" - Penguin Random House

John Updike And Barbara Fox. Marry Me. Franklin Library, E-004, 1976.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Hardcover. 8vo. The Franklin Library. 1976. 347 pgs. Illustrated with Black and White Plates. First Edition/First Printing. Lengthy note from John Updike laid in describing how he was unwilling to sign this book as he was "not a signing machine". Bound in leather with gilt decoration present to the front board and spine. Leather has very light wear present along the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid. Marry Me is subtitled "A Romance" because, in the author’s words, "people don’t act like that anymore. " The time is 1962, and the place is a fiefdom of Camelot called Greenwood, Connecticut. Jerry Conant and Sally Mathias are in love and want to get married, though they already are married to others. A diadem of five symmetrical chapters describes the course of their affair as it flickers off and on, and as their spouses react, in a tentative late-summer atmosphere of almost-last chances. For this is, as Jerry observes, "the twilight of the old morality, and there’s just enough to torment us, and not enough to hold us in. " E-04; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 347 pages

Updike, John. Illustrated by Barbara Fox [Erica Jong]. Marry Me: A Romance.. The Franklin Library, Franklin Center, Pennsylvania, 1976.

Price: US$300.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of "the gentlest book Updike has written" (Kirkus Reviews), privately printed exclusively for Members of the First Edition Society. Octavo, original publisher's full leather elaborately stamped in gilt, moire silk endpapers, all edges gilt, silk ribbon bound in. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the limitation page, "For Erica + Ken warm regards, John." The recipients, American writer Erica Jong and lawyer Kenneth David Burrows were married in August of 1989. Erica Jong remains best known for her 1973 novel Fear of Flying which became famously controversial for its portrayal of female sexuality and figured prominently in the development of second-wave feminism. Written in the first person and narrated by its protagonist, 29-year-old American poet Isadora Wing, Fear of Flying was written in the throes of the Sexual Revolution of the 1970s and encapsulated the movement’s redefinition of female sexuality. In interviews, Jong stated: “At the time I wrote Fear of Flying, there was not a book that said women are romantic, women are intellectual, women are sexualâ€"and brought all those things together… What [Isadora is] looking for is how to be a whole human being, a body and a mind, and that is what women were newly aware they needed in 1973.” The novel remains a feminist classic and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. In fine condition. "This understatement, this unwavering vision fixed on only four characters, is a part of what makes the story so effective. Updike's best fiction has always been his most narrowly focused; in this novel the plot is directâ€"complex without becoming complicated by symbols thrashing obtrusively just behind the canvasâ€"and refreshingly free from the portentousness that has marred several of his most ambitious novels. 'Marry Me' is the best written and least self-conscious of Updike's longer fiction; it contains his most sophisticated and sympathetic portraits of women. It is quite simply, Updike's best novel yet. I can't believe that anyone married or divorced could read it without being moved" (Peter S. Prescott, Newsweek),

UPDIKE, John. Marry Me: A Romance. Franklin Library, Franklin Station, 1976.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: First edition. Fine in full leather with gilt. One of an unspecified number of copies of a limited edition of the first edition, with a special message to subscribers from Updike that does not appear in the trade edition. Although not issued Signed this copy is Inscribed: "For Herb Yellin in person nice to meet you. John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association and an interesting, marking what would be the beginning of a very long collaboration and friendship.
