The publisher, Heritage Press, is known for its attractive and affordable reprints of special editions previously produced by the Limited Editions Club and other presses. Well-kept copy in red silk-like cloth lettered in gilt, metallic gold slipcase. The book is in about fine condition, looks and feels new and unread, with firm binding, very clean pages free from names or other markings. The slipcase has some minor wear and rubbin to the extremities, structurally sound. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good Slipcase. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

The Press printed more affordable classic volumes that were previously published by Macy's Limited Editions Club and covered a broad range of topics primarily within the Western canon. In addition to Macy, directors of the Heritage Press included Cedric Crowell, General Manager of the Doubleday Bookshops; Frank L. Magel, head of Putnam Bookstores in New York; and A. Koch, head of Brentano Stores in New York. Though many of Macy's other imprints, including The Heritage Club, The Heritage Illustrated Bookshelf, and The Junior Heritage Club, were sold by subscription only, Heritage Press editions were sold through bookstores. Binding is still tight and internally clean. The slipcase with some soiling and a small round mark on front board (possibly from a sticker) , slightly rougher feel along the spine also with slight darkening and soiling. Small bump (bubble) at the top of the spine and the same along the top of the slipcase. Slipcase entirely intact with no damage, tears or splitting, VG+ or better. Classic by Lucius Apuleius and retold by Walter Pater with a prologue by him. Illustrated in water color by Edmund Dulac, illustrations printed in process collotype by Arthur Jaffe. Designed by Warren Chappell and printed by Huxley House, hand-set in Trajanus type on Curtis special paper.
