This first two-volume edition is an entirely new setting (not a rearrangement of previous editions) of the original four-volume edition of 1933-34. This unabridged edition retains all the maps and plans of the original, but illustrations have been removed other than the two frontispieces. Language: English. Book Condition: Good: Light wear to corners, edges and spine ends. Rubbed cloth with minor spots and marks in places. Both volumes are tightly bound with lightly spotted intact endpapers with firm hinges. Clean unmarked pages with minor creasing to edges of a few fold outs. The initial draft appeared in 1932, and passed to Edward Marsh to edit.Providing a biography of the life of the duke, as well as painting a picture of English Restoration and Europe in the time of Charles II.Volume II in its unclipped dust wrapper, lacking to vol. I. With frontispieces and numerous illustrations, maps, and plans throughout, some folding. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Vol. II with minor faint damp markings to the boards, and a minor creasing to the lower right corner of the front board. Library shelf number inked to the spine of vol. II. The dust wrapper of vol. Description: Edition : This edition in two Books., contemporary full burgundy cloth over board, title in gilt on flat spine, upper board decorated with Duke of Marlborough's arms in gilt., Marlborough His Life and Times is a panegyric biography written by Winston Churchill about John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Churchill was a lineal descendant of the duke. Churchill had conceived the idea of writing the book by 1929, when the conservative defeat in the general election meant that he was no longer a government minister, giving him both spare time and the loss of his ministerial salary. His first act in preparing the book was to employ Maurice Ashley part-time for a salary of £300 per year to carry out research about Marlborough. Ashley later produced his own biography of Marlborough, in 1939. Churchill, with other assistants, worked on and published a number of different historical books while work on Marlborough was proceeding. Churchill turned seriously to writing Marlborough after Easter 1932, following pressure from his publishers. His initial draft was passed to Edward Marsh, who had been his private secretary while a government minister, with instructions to look out for repetitions, boring passages or clumsy sentences.
