Winston S. Churchill. Marlborough: His Life and Times, Volume II. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1933.

Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Description: This is a jacketed U.S. first edition, first printing of the second volume of Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough. During the years covered by this volume (1688-1702), "Marlborough is shown growing in military experience and political sagacity Out of this volume emerges a vivid picture of Marlborough in his prime, ambitious, aggrieved, outspoken, bland and redoubtable, soon to exercise command over a military coalition vaster than any man wielded until the advent of Napoleon." The volume features a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. The British first edition was issued in four volumes. The U.S. publisher chose to split the first two volumes into two books each, resulting in a six-volume set that is otherwise identical in content to the British. Only when the sixth and final volume was published in 1938 were all six U.S. first editions offered in the uniform blue and gold dust jackets. This U.S. first edition, first printing of Volume II is near-fine in a very good, uniform issue blue and gold dust jacket. The green cloth binding is tight, clean, and square with bright spine gilt. The only trivial exterior flaws are tiny bumps to the rear cover corners and the slightest hint of scuffing to the front face. The contents are clean and bright with no spotting or inscriptions. The Scribner's "A" on the copyright page confirms first printing. Even the untrimmed fore edges remain clean. The dust jacket remains bright and unclipped, still bearing the original $2.75 price on the upper front flap. There is trivial wear, mostly at the spine ends and corners, with minor scuffing to the front face. Fractional loss is confined to the spine head and corners. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. Marlborough was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s, which he spent politically isolated, often at odds with both his own party and prevailing public sentiment. This decade saw Churchill pass into his sixties with his own future as uncertain as that of his nation. It is perhaps not incidental that Churchill’s great work of the 1930s was about a great ancestor. Churchill may have wondered more than once if the life history he was writing might ultimately eclipse his own. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." Few would accuse Churchill of objectivity. Nonetheless, as a work of history it drew high praise. Upon reading the proofs, James Lewis Garvin, editor of The Observer, wrote "I think it to be the greatest of all your works Your full brush has never had more mastery over space and colour " Two months after Volume I was published, on 12 December 1933, T.E. Lawrence wrote to Churchill: "I finished it only yesterday. I wish I had not The skeleton of the book is so good. Its parts balance and the main stream flows Marlborough has the big scene-painting, the informed pictures of men, the sober comment on political method, the humour, irony and understanding of your normal writing: but beyond that it shows more discipline and strength: and great dignity. It is history, solemn and decorative." When Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, it was partly for "mastery of historical and biographical description" on the strength of Marlborough, which was specifically cited and quoted by the Swedish Academy. Winston S. Churchill. Marlborough: His Life and Times, Volumes I & II in the first printing, first state dust jackets. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1933.

Price: US$240.00 + shipping

Description: This is a U.S. first edition set of the first two volumes of Winston Churchill’s Marlborough in the first state dust jackets. The British first edition of Churchill’s biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was issued in four volumes. The U.S. publisher chose to split the first two volumes into two books each, resulting in a six-volume set that is otherwise identical in content to the British. These first four U.S. volumes were originally issued in two-volume sets, with cream-colored dust jackets featuring green print. Only in 1938, when the sixth and final U.S. volume was published, were the more commonly seen blue and gold dust jackets issued. Today the first state dust jackets are scarcer than their blue and gold counterparts. Here are fine copies of the first two volumes in nearly very good, first state dust jackets. The green cloth bindings are beautifully clean, tight, and square with bright spine gilt, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. The contents of each volume are bright and clean. We find no previous ownership marks and no spotting. Even the untrimmed fore edges remain clean and bright. The dust jackets show the customary transfer browning to the Volume II front panel and Volume I rear panel caused by the original cardboard publisher’s slipcase (no longer present), as well as toning to the spines. Fractional loss is confined to the spine heads and the upper edge of the Volume II front panel. We note a 2 cm closed tear to the upper edge of the Volume I front panel as well as scuffing and staining to the spines. The dust jackets are protected beneath clear, removable, archival covers. CHURCHILL, Winston S.. Marlborough. His Life and Times.. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933-38, 1933.

Price: US$1299.55 + shipping

Description: First US editions, first printings, in the secondary dust jackets - on the completion of the publication of the set with varying jacket designs, remaining copies were issued together with uniform jackets. Winston Churchill was a direct descendent of John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, who led allied forces to victory against Louis XIV during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1715). Churchill worked on his biography for almost a decade and had the advantage of exclusive access to the Blenheim Palace archives to research the book. On publication, the work "took its place at once among the classics of historical writing. As the story of his ancestor's leadership of a grand alliance to prevent the domination of the continent by a single power, it was also a source of inspiration to Churchill in his campaign against appeasement" (ODNB). The British editions preceded the US editions. Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes. Cohen A97.4(I-VI).a. 6 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt. With dust jackets. Jackets a little rubbed and worn, some chips with slight loss to lettering and a few closed tears into lettering without loss, price-clipped, all still presentable: fine copies in very good jackets.

Winston S. Churchill. Marlborough: His Life and Times, a full set of six U.S. first edition, first printings in the rare first state dust jackets and slipcases. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1933.

Price: US$3000.00 + shipping

Description: Here is a full set of six U.S. first edition, first printings of Winston Churchill’s monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough. This set features the quite scarce first state dust jackets and slipcases, and is the best we have encountered thus. The U.S. publisher chose to split the first two volumes into two books each; the six-volume U.S. first edition is identical in content its four-volume British counterpart, but dramatically different in appearance. Moreover, there were two distinctly different states of the U.S. first edition. The first four U.S. volumes were originally issued in two-volume sets, with cream-colored dust jackets featuring green print, each two-volume set housed in an illustrated publisher’s slipcase. The fifth volume was originally issued in a white dust jacket with a red-printed design matching that of the two slipcases for volumes I & II and volumes III & IV. Only in 1938, when the sixth and final U.S. volume was published, were the more commonly seen blue and gold dust jackets issued. Today the first state dust jackets are quite scarce, and the fragile original slipcases doubly so. This is a full, first state set comprising fine or near fine first printing volumes in very good plus or better dust jackets. All six volumes feature immaculate green cloth bindings and bright contents with no internal spotting or previous ownership marks. The first four volumes are virtually as-new, having been protected by both their original dust jackets and the slipcases. Only Volume V shows some dust soiling and spotting to the top edge. All six dust jackets are unclipped, retaining the original publisher’s prices where they appeared and complete, with no appreciable loss. The cream-colored dust jackets of the first four volumes all show mild, uniform spine toning as well as a few trivial blemishes. The edges, specifically the upper top edge of the Volume I & Volume IV front faces, show just a touch of scuffing and tiny closed tears, almost certainly from the jackets catching on the edges of their slipcases. The rear face of Volume III and front face of Volume IV also show mild, uniform transfer browning from contact with the cardboard slipcase interior. The first state Volume V dust jacket is magnificently bright – by far the best example we have ever seen, with only mild soiling to the rear face. The Volume VI dust jacket is also compellingly bright, with excellent shelf presentation and only mild scuffing. All six dust jackets are protected beneath clear, removable, archival covers. Both slipcases are fully intact, despite inevitable soiling and wear to extremities. Some of the seams are starting, but all still holding together. We will pack this large, heavy, set, with care and ship at cost. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s, which he spent politically isolated, often at odds with both his own party and prevailing public sentiment. Churchill may have wondered if the life history he was writing might eclipse his own. Price: US$3248.86 + shipping

Description: First US editions, first printings, scarce in the jackets and slipcases (the slipcases were only issued for the first four volumes); this set is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen. The British editions, published in the same time span, preceded the US editions. Provenance: Ronald Cohen, with his ownership inscription in pencil on the front free endpapers. Cohen's Bibliography of the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, published in three volumes in 2006, is the authoritative source for collectors, librarians, and dealers. Cohen A97.4(I-VI).a. 6 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt. With dust jackets; first 4 volumes in 2 slipcases, as issued. Contents lightly foxed at beginning and end; jackets a little worn, more substantially to volume IV with loss to lettering, vol. Volumes I and II are in white dust jackets printed green and are slipcased as a set; as are Volumes III and IV. Volume V is in its unique off-white dust jacket printed red and black. They are otherwise in very good condition. The jackets of Volumes III and IV are clean and very bright but do have fractional losses at the spine heads that have been filled out with archival paper backing to each verso, as well as a triangular closed tear on the rear face of Volume III and a faint hint of scattered foxing to Volume IV. They are otherwise quit fine. Both slipcases are impressively bright, if very lightly scuffed and separating just a bit along the edges. All books are virtually mint.
