A FINE COPY OF AN EARLY REISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION. "As might be expected of anything which Mark Twain wrote, this autobiography is unlike any other ever written-as unconventional and unorthodox as its great author. Always, when the time came for him to go on with the dictation, he chose as his subject whatever was most interesting to him at the moment, regardless of chronological order. For he believed that a man’s thoughts, not his outward acts are his true history, which alone reveal him completely. "The resulting book is a stream of table-talk: anecdotes, humorous and serious; reminiscences of his mother, his daughter Susy, his boyhood days in Missouri; chronicles of his friendships with all manner of men, from General Grant and President Cleveland to his Irish coachman and the unfamed intimates of his vagabond youth; bold expressions of opinion on every sort of topic-all are here, full of the vigor and the humanity of their author, and forming an inexhaustible mine of entertainment, amusement, and delight." Dictated by Twain over several years with the stipulation that it be published after his death.

TWAIN, Mark; PAINE, Albert Bigelow (Contrib.). Mark Twain’s Autobiography. In Two Volumes.. Harper and Brothers, 1924.

Price: US$399.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: 1924 1ed Mark TWAIN Autobiography Anecdotes Missouri Huck Finn Tom Sawyer 2v “Mark Twain’s Autobiography. In Two Volumes”, published in 1924 by Harper and Brothers, is a unique compilation of the famed American author’s reflections, memories, and contemplations, rather than a conventional chronological narrative of his life. The majority of this work was dictated by Twain in his later years, enabling the text to maintain an intimate and conversational tone. Introduced by Albert Bigelow Paine, Twain’s close friend and literary executor, the book encapsulates the freedom Twain felt in sharing his thoughts without restriction, knowing the work wouldn't be published until after his death. These volumes consist of around two-fifths of Twain’s unpublished writings, weaving together multiple starts and stops of autobiography attempts, and creating a rich tapestry of the iconic author’s life as seen through his own eyes. Price: US$2000.00 + shipping

Description: Including duplicated half-title in Volume II and a list of books by Twain at the end. Sepia-toned frontispiece in each volume. Pasted into Volume I are 3 unused Russian and Romanian postage stamps commemorating Mark Twain from 1960, Volume II also with an unused Russian postage stamp. First edition, first printing, suggested state "A" (see BAL). This autobiography is not a formal document of the author's colorful life, but a collection of anecdotes and stories from his boyhood in Missouri, remembrances of his family, and details of his relationships with everyone from presidents to personal friends, told without regard to chronology. During his lifetime, Clemens claimed his autobiography would be so shocking that a hundred-year moratorium should be placed on its publication. However, fragments of his recollections were assembled and published within fifteen years of his death. Clemens (1835-1910), who wrote under the pen name Mark Twain, is considered one of America's all time greatest humorists and writers. This text provides a unique portrait of the artist as a man. The excerpts assembled here were compiled by his friend, biographer, and literary executor Albert Bigelow Paine (1861-1931). Paine, a respected author in his own right, was a member of the Pulitzer Prize Committee and received the title of Chevalier in the French government's Legion of Honor for his book on Joan of Arc.
