BYRON, George Gordon. Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice [bound with] Werner, A Tragedy. John Murray, London, 1821.

Price: US$457.78 + shipping

Description: Tall octavo, missing both half-titles, 'Marino Faliero' without terminal ad.; contemporary green half morocco, gilt, Attractive volume of two important works by Byron. First edition, first issue of Marino Faliero: the Doge's speech on page 151 consists of only five and a half lines (Byron added seven new lines for the second issue) and page 154 has only twenty-one lines; in the second issue there are twenty-five lines. Set in Venice in 1355, it is the story of 'a man of talents and of courage' and, as the preface and appendix attest, of a figure who fascinated Byron. It is bound with the first edition, first issue of Werner (without imprint or 'The End' on the terminal page). Dedicated 'To the illustrious Goëthe', it is one of Byron's most important works, and again takes as its motivation the tragedy of the great man assailed by the forces of the world. Byron notes in the preface, 'When I was young (about fourteen, I think) I first read this tale, which made a deep impression on me; and may, indeed, be said to contain the germ of much that I have since written'. . Rubbed at joints and extremities.

Byron, George Gordon Noel, Lord. MARINO FALIERO, DOGE OF VENICE. An Historical Tragedy, in Five Acts. [and] THE PROPHECY OF DANTE, A Poem [bound with] Letter to **** ******, on the Rev. W.L. Bowles' Strictures on the Life and Writings of Pope [bound with] Mazeppa, a poem.. John Murray, London, 1821.

Price: US$481.04 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: XXI, [1], 261, [1] printed pages. The first issue with the Doge's speech on page 151 consisting of only five and a half lines and only 21 lines on page 154. Set in Venice in 1355, "Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice" is a blank verse tragedy in five acts by Lord Byron, who was inspired to take on this subject when, on examining the portraits of the Doges in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, he discovered that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out. The first of Byron's two Venetian plays, a well-documented historical drama about the Doge who turned traitor to the Venetian Republic. Marino Faliero, recently elected Doge of Venice, offends one of the chief officers of state, Michel Steno. Steno retaliates by writing on the Doge's throne an indecent libel on Faliero's wife. For this he is tried by the Council of Forty and convicted, but is only sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Faliero is so outraged by this, as he believes, inadequate punishment that he secretly joins in the conspiracy of a group of malcontents to overthrow the constitution of Venice, thinking thereby to gain revenge on his enemies. The plot is discovered and Faliero is executed. Published along with his poem based on Dante's exile and death in Ravenna. Written at Ravenna during the month of June 1819, "The Prophecy of Dante" was intended for the Italians as a vision of "liberty and the resurrection of Italy" (see Medwin, "Conversations," (1824), page 241). Bound with a third edition, 1821, of Letter to **** ******, on the Rev. W.L. Bowles' Strictures on the Life and Writings of Pope, 61 printed pages, London: John Murray, Albemarle-Street. 2500 copies of the entire edition printed. The Strictures appeared in Bowles's 1806 edition of Pope. Bound with Mazeppa, a Poem, first edition, 1819, London: John Murray, Albemarle-Street. [2], 71 printed pages. Second Issue with p. 70 blank and publisher's imprint moved to reverse of p. 71. Byron's narrative poem based on the early life of Ivan Mazeppa, a Ukrainian military leader who served in the Polish court but was, at least according to legend, strapped naked to a wild horse and exiled for having an affair. The volume also contains the short poem "Ode" and the short prose piece, "Fragment of a Novel", pages [57]-69, Byron's unfinished vampire tale written during the same three-day stormy writing contest at the Villa Diodati in June 1816 by Lake Geneva that produced Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and John Polidori's The Vampyre (itself considered the first English vampire story, though based largely on Byron and his Fragment). The unfinished piece was included with Mazeppa against Byron's wishes. In 1820 he wrote to Murray, "I shall not allow you to play the tricks you did last year with the prose you post-scribed to 'Mazeppa', which I sent you to not be published, if not in a periodical paper,--and there you tacked it, without a word of explanation, and be damned to you." [Wise p.132]. Some very mild browning on ocassional leaves. 22.5 x 14.5 cm. Rebound in half calf. Spine in six compartments, with raised bands and double gilt rules & red morocco label with gilt lettering. The boards are in marbled papers and the corners are blind ruled. All edges with contemporary marbling. A three-books-in-one combination of two first and one third editions of Lord Byron in very good condition with a beautiful modern binding in a nineteenth century design.

Byron, Lord George Gordon. Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice. An Historical Tragedy. In Five Acts. With Notes. The Prophecy of Dante, a Poem.. John Murray, London, 1821.

Price: US$975.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue of Byron's posthumously published tragedy with the Doge's speech on p. 151 that begins "What crimes ?" Octavo, bound in full contemporary calf with a black morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt ruling to the spine and panels, marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice is a blank verse tragedy in five acts by Lord Byron, published and first performed in 1821. Byron was inspired to take on this subject when, on examining the portraits of the Doges in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, he discovered that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out. The main historical source he drew on was Marino Sanuto's Vite dei Dogi (published posthumously 1733). He completed the play in July 1820, by which time he was living in Ravenna, and published it in April 1821, along with his The Prophecy of Dante. He intended to dedicate it to Goethe, but delays in the post between Italy and England resulted in the play being published without a dedication. The posthumous 1832 edition of Byron's collected works included a later dedication of the play by Byron to his friend Douglas Kinnaird. Marino Faliero was translated into French in 1830 and into Italian in 1838.

(BYRON, George Noel Gordon, Baron) (ELLISTON, Robert William). As the legal question in respect to the Performance of Lord Byron's Tragedy is still to be discussed,. Folio.. J. Tabby, Printer, Theatre-Royal, Drury Lane. 1821, 1821.

Price: US$3104.28 + shipping

Description: A single sheet printed on cheap greenish paper; sl. chipped & creased at edges, with traces of one old fold. A good copy. Elliston's unsigned self-justification is described by Christopher Murray in his biography as "one of his famous handbills". It is headed 'Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Monday, April 30, 1821' and was unknown to Arnott & Robinson, in whose bibliography it is related to items 3847 and 3848. Elliston, the manager of Drury Lane, obtained a printed copy of Byron's play, having failed to get permission from Byron himself or John Murray to stage the work. With nominal permission from George Lambe on the Drury Lane Committee, Elliston submitted a heavily censored text to the Lord Chamberlain for licensing: 'we have so curtailed [it] that I believe not a single objectionable line exists'. (This text is now in the Huntington Library.) The play was staged on 25th April 1821 with a nondescript and under-rehearsed cast of John Cooper as Marino, Wallack as Bertuccio, and Mrs West as Angiolina. Elliston in this bill states that 'No impression could have been more forcible: no applause more genuine, or perfect' but contemporary reviews were unfavourable and hostile, the public disapproving and the receipts less than might have been expected. After the first performance John Murray obtained an injunction in Chancery prohibiting further performances before April 30th, but Elliston's position was legally correct, and he issued this piece of effrontery, poorly printed at the Theatre's own press, before the five further performances, taking full advantage of Byron's exile. CBEL 3 - attributes to Byron a 'Letter to R.W. Elliston on the injustice and illegality of his conduct in presenting Lord Byron's tragedy Marino Faliero' (1821).
