Description: Mardi, (the Polynesian word meaning "the world") is Melville's philosophical novel recounting a voyage through fictional South Sea islands; it was a precursor to Moby Dick. This was first published in London, printed by Richard Bentley the same year. Two vols, sml 8vo, xii, 365pp; xii, 387pp, ads (8). Original blind stamped plum cloth, gilt title to spines, publishers gilt logo at base of spine. Spines & covers sunned to brown, spine tips chipped. Internally, small owner initial stamps at ffep, some light foxing early. Notations of an early owner inside the cover of volume one tracking the value from 1927 to 1932 at booksellers such as Goodspeed, Stone, Dawson and C.T. Johnson, from $20 - $225.

Description: First edition. X, 336; X, 335; VIII, 348 pp. Near contemporary half calf, slightly worn. Trace of wrapper glued to inside covers of all three volumes, two leaves in vol. 2 detached. Half-titles, called for part 2 and 3 are not present here. The English edition predates the American edition.

Description: First edition. Three volumes. Large 12mo. Later dark blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges untrimmed, blue-grey endpapers. London, Richard Bentley. A good set rebound in functional library cloth, with the half title to Vol. 3 but lacking the half title to Vol. 2 (none called for in Vol. 1). Staining to lower portion of fore edge of Vol. 1. Front and rear joints to Vol. 1 split but holding firmly, light wear to extremities, corners bumped, some faint marking to covers. Stylish engraved bookplate to front free endpaper of Vol. 1 of 'J. Billson' with the motto 'Who reads and reads and acts not what he knows is one who ploughs and ploughs and never sows'. Bibliography of American Literature, 13657.
