O'Neill, Eugene Gladstone (1888-1953). Marco Millions. Boni & Liveright, New York, 1927.

Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: xii-180+[epilogue]. Octavo (8 14" x 5 12") bound in original green boards with gilt lettering to spine and gilt facsimile signature to front cover and light green ruled edge. First edition. Eugene Gladstone O'Neill (October 16, 1888 ¿ November 27, 1953) was an Irish American playwright and Nobel laureate in Literature. His poetically titled plays were among the first to introduce into American drama techniques of realism earlier associated with Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, and Swedish playwright August Strindberg. His plays were among the first to include speeches in American vernacular and involve characters on the fringes of society, where they struggle to maintain their hopes and aspirations, but ultimately slide into disillusionment and despair. Of his very few comedies, only one is well-known (Ah, Wilderness!). Nearly all of his other plays involve some degree of tragedy and personal pessimism. Marco Millions is a tremendous satirical dramatization of the life and journeys of Marco Polo, the Venetian, written in O'Neil's poetical manner. Against a myriad of colorful, beautiful scenes laid in the great countries of the exotic East, Marco Polo travels toward romance that never touches him - for O'Neil sees him as a merchant, a Babbitt of his time, one who lets beauty and love slip through his fingers as so much discarded merchandise. Here is an intensely satirical and amusing play, with an undercurrent of something far more poignant and touching than mere satire. Condition: Small stain to back cover. Jacket chipped at corners and spine ends, some edge wear with a closed tear and creasing else a very good to fine copy in like jacket.

O'Neill, Eugene. Marco Millions. A Play. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927.

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first printing. Original publisher's blue cloth, lettered in gilt; light blue dust jacket, lettered in black. Near fine with light fading and a touch of wear to the spine; dust jacket unclipped with some wear and shallow chips to the spine ends, spine lightly toned. Nobel laureate in Literature Eugene O’Neill’s play Marco Millions references the story of Marco Polo as a backdrop for a satirical comedy. Despite being set in the 1200s in faraway lands, O’Neill uses the play to criticize what he saw as the rampant materialism of his day. The character of Marco is inspired by both the author’s alcoholic father and the famous financier Otto Kahn. Kahn was a person O’Neill often used as a model in his work. The character Marco notably complains, "I hate idleness, where there's nothing to occupy your mind but thinking," cuttingly implying that the elite class used finance as a diversion from their desolate internal lives.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Large octavo, 180pp. A very near fine copy in the publisher's decorated paper boards and white paper (sometimes called vellum) spine. Spine gently darkened, as always, but the book otherwise extremely fresh and lovely. A clear plastic dust jacket is present, which is probably not original to the book. This is number 197 of (or is it 199?) of 140 limited copies SIGNED by O'Neill on the limitation page. The publisher's decorative paper-covered slipcase with matching number is near fine, with a few nicks. A very handsome copy; uncommon in this condition. Though not marked as such, this copy has a laid-in description from a previous bookseller who identifies it as having emerged from the library of playwright Hugh Whitemore. A tongue-in-cheek birthday card from Herbert Kretzmer and his wife Sybil to Whitemore is laid-in.
