Description: Signed limited edition, number 149 of 150 copies signed by Gunn. Attractively printed at the Rampant Lions Press and beautifully illustrated by Leonard Baskin. "It occurs to me that 'Mandrakes' can be read as an allegory about the fate of the English - or English poetry - in what is, for the English, supposedly a post-imperialist age. It can also be read as a poem about secret or hidden forms of desire as these persist, about paganism" (Tuma, p. 102). Keith Tuma, "Thom Gunn and Anglo-American Modernism" in Joshua Weiner, ed., At the Barriers: On the Poetry of Thom Gunn, 2009. Quarto. Original vellum-backed dark brown-red boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in publisher's red buckram slipcase. Frontispiece and 4 full-page illustrations by Leonard Baskin. The binding sharp, internally crisp; a fine copy.
