Description: This first edition of a rare Sinclair historical novel is in very good condition with no dust jacket. Bound in grey-blue cloth, the cover and spine are embossed with gold print and design. The cover design includes an eagle and a border of drums. The interior has no writing, though there is some age discoloration of pages and end papers. The book's edges and corners do show some wear.

First edition, first printing (August, 1904 on verso of title) of this neo-abolitionist novel set during the Civil War, which marked Sinclair's shift to the historical novel from his previously sentimental American fiction. The work was intended to be the first in a trilogy which focused on a young Southerner who enlisted in the Union Army and fought at the Battle of Manassas, or as the Northerners referred to it, The First Battle of Bull Run, where Stonewall Jackson earned his name.
