Description: No dust jacket. Hardcover. Very worn, faded and grubby boards. Rear board has numerous red ink marks over lower part. Spine is very worn and rubbed, with some wear, bumping and rubbing to ends. Leading corners are worn and bumped. Head of page block is in gilt; face and foot are rough-cut. Decorative pastedowns and endpapers. Pages are a little tanned, and first few pages have noticeable age-spotting. Tear on upper edge of final page. Hinges are cracked but binding appears sound. Binding has remained firm. Boards have been moderately rub worn. Noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed Spine ends are crushed, with noticeable splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Good. This book contains short stories by Twain, and initially appeared in Harper's Monthly in the US. It is written as a satirical replay of the Garden of Eden Bible story and features themes of dishonesty and temptation. It was made into a short TV film directed by Ralph Rosenblum in 1980. The edges of the spine are wearing through, having a crackly appearance (possibly insect damage) which penetrates through to the gutters of the endpapers. However, the binding is still quite secure for normal handling. Surfaces chafed, with a few tiny rubbed-through spots. Some foxing inside, and advertisement pages tanned. Text unmarked. The first UK edition, first state, with advertisements dated June 1900.

Both hinges are starting and there is a remnant of a removed plate on the front pastedown.
