Pat Kirkham. War Culture: Social Change and Changing Experience in World War Two. Lawrence & Wishart Ltd, United Kingdom, 1995.

Price: US$3.66 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: One of the most traumatic periods of British history was also a time of exciting social upheaval. This book seeks to understand the social and cultural changes that were wrought during this time by charting the experiences of the adults and children, men and women, and different ethnic groups who lived the hard life on the home front. The book covers a wide range of issues ranging from racism to women's dress of the period, from professional football to morale in the Blitz, written by academics from many different areas of social and cultural study. It also includes a substantial autobiographical section with essays by Alan Silitoe, Stephen Knight and Peter Davidson, providing an informed personal slant to this archaeology of Britain's past. Pat Kirkham is the author of "Charles and Ray Eames: Designers of the 20th Century". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Moers, Walter:. Sex und Gewalt.. Frankfurt am Main : Eichborn Verlag, 1995.

Price: US$8.84 + shipping

Condition: As New

Description: [48] Seiten mit vielen Abbildungen. 30,5 x 21,5 cm. Sehr guter Zustand. Frisches Exemplar. E.T.A.

Grisham's sixth spellbinding novel of legal intrigue and corporate greed displays all of the intricate plotting, fast-paced action, humor, and suspense that have made him the most popular author of our time. In his first courtroom thriller since A Time To Kill, John Grisham tells the story of a young man barely out of law school who finds himself taking on one of the most powerful, corrupt, and ruthless companies in America -- and exposing a complex, multibillion-dollar insurance scam. In his final semester of law school Rudy Baylor is required to provide free legal advice to a group of senior citizens, and it is there that he meets his first 'clients,' Dot and Buddy Black. Their son, Donny Ray, is dying of leukemia, and their insurance company has flatly refused to pay for his medical treatments. While Rudy is at first skeptical, he soon realizes that the Blacks really have been shockingly mistreated by the huge company, and that he just may have stumbled upon one of the largest insurance frauds anyone's ever seen -- and one of the most lucrative and important cases in the history of civil litigation. The problem is, Rudy's flat broke, has no job, hasn't even passed the bar, and is about to go head-to-head with one of the best defense attorneys -- and powerful industries -- in America.

I hope you will find some that you like- In going where you have to go, and doing what you have to do, and seeing what you have to see, you dull and blunt the instrument you write with. But I would rather have it bent and dulled and know I had to put it on the grindstone and hammer it into shape and put a whetstone to it, and know that I had something to write about, than to have it bright and shining, and nothing to say, or smooth and well-oiled in the closet, but unused.'A collection of Hemingway's first forty-nine short stories, featuring a brief introduction by the author and lesser known as well as familiar tales, including 'Up in Michigan', 'Fifty Grand', and 'The Light of the World', and the Snows of Kilimanjaro, Winner Take Nothing' and Men Without Women collections. 467 pp. Englisch

Description: Neuware - The strange and wonderful tale of man's experiences on Mars, filled with intense images and astonishing visions. The classic work that transformed Ray Bradbury into a household name. Written in the age of the atom when America and Europe optimisitcally viewed the discovery of life on Mars as inevitable, Bradbury's 1940s short stories of a brutal, stark and unforgiving martian landscape were as shocking and visionary as they were insightful. 'The Martian Chronicles' tells the story of humanity's repeated attempts to colonize the red planet. The first men were few. Most succumbed to a disease they called the Great Loneliness when they saw their home planet dwindle to the size of a pin dot. Those few that survived found no welcome. The shape-changing Martians thought they were native lunatics and duly locked them up. More rockets arrived from Earth, piercing the hallucinations projected by the Martians. People brought their old prejudices with them - and their desires and fantasies, tainted dreams. These were soon inhabited by the strange native beings, with their caged flowers and birds of flame. 320 pp. Englisch

Tashjian Dickran. A Boatload of Madmen: Surrealism and the American Avant - Garde 1920 - 1950. Thames & Hudson 1995, 1995.

Price: US$12.88 + shipping

Description: Near Fine in publishers cloth in like dustjacket. 424pp. Illustrated throughout. 1st edition, 1st issue. The American art community had its first glimpse of Surrealism in 1932. Its revolutionary art galvanised an emerging avant-garde. New galleries opened to exhibit the works of Surrealist artists, and new magazines sprang up to publish a startling crop of Surrealist poetry, criticism and attacks on mainstream culture and politics. Only four years later, a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art catapulted Surrealism into the cultural limelight and the attentions of high-fashion magazines like "Harper's Bazaar" and "Vogue". Soon the art of Man Ray was selling cologne and swimwear; and the manic Salvador Dali was designing windows for Bonwitt's and a pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Even Andre Breton and his circle, exiled in Manhattan during World War II, were unable to assert control over this new kind of Surrealism. In this cultural history, Professor Dickran Tashjian tells the story of Surrealism's remarkable sea change, from a fiercely leftist, strongly literary, avant-garde movement into an apolitical almost exclusively visual style. Exploring both high and low cultural perspectives, he shows how the American avant-garde selectively reshaped European Surrealism to meet its own agendas, and how it was in turn reinterpreted, de-politicized and commercially exploited by mainstream American culture and the fashion and advertising industries. Dickran Tashjian teaches in the Programme in Comparative Culture at the University of California, Irvine, and is the author of several books, including "Joseph Cornell: Gifts of Desire". Description: Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Clean, unmarked pages. Includes related ephemera. " Raymond Gilbert Davis, General, U. S. Marine Corps, is a man of relatively few words. The fact that the following could be extracted from this authentic hero is something this writer originally deemed impossible. We had discussed such a project back in 1954. As a Tactics Instructor at The Basic School in Quantico, I had sold articles about "our" battalion, the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines. At the Chosin Reservoir, Korea, he was the Commanding Officer, and I was in one of his rifle companies. At that time Colonel Ray Davis’ reply had been: "Bill, if you think such a book would tell the real story about what a great job our troops did in that terribly difficult environment, I'm available." It all came back in late November, 1987, when he sent money for another copy of my book, CHOSIN MARINE--which he termed "the worm's eye view." Bill," he wrote, "you talked about getting together on a book. Perhaps now is the time." Originally, after discussing the project with Brigadier General E. H. Simmons, Director of Marine Corps History and Museums the following January, the plan was to create a biography. We would meld together input from brother Marines and others from around the globe, plus my observations gained in ten different tours with him between 1947 and 1971 with emphasis on what he had learned and how it could be best passed on to future generations. The truth is that all incoming reports appeared to be written more about a man slated for sainthood rather than "Lessons Learned in Combat Leadership" in three major wars; wars of the caliber required to earn a Navy Cross in World War II, the Medal of Honor in Korea and the Distinguished Service Medal in Vietnam."

But as a rookie- and a woman- she is spurned by the department after she accuses the veteran Ford of corruption. When a subsequent raid of her home reveals a hidden stash of drugs, Jayne is suspended without pay. Lonely and alone and falling ever deeper into a crippling depression, she spends her days nurturing a taste for alcohol, further, complicating her troubled situation. Ray Dixon, one of Jayne's Police Academy instructors, knows his former student is a good cop, and he remains her staunch supporter. Concerned for Jayne's welfare and convinced that work will give her the support she needs, he persuades Gwenn Ramadge to give Jayne a second chance, and Gwenn hires her to work a surveillance job in an upscale neighborhood on Long Island's North Shore. Jayne quickly earns Gwenn's trust and respect, but when Jayne is found dead inside a rental car in Manhattan, the police immediately label her death a suicide. Forced to investigate the case on her own in the face of police apathy, Gwenn is determined to prove it was murder. Ray too becomes involved, working the case from an angle even Gwenn can't quite understand. As they dig, the specter of corruption and its increasing presence on the force looms even larger. SUMMARY: With a pocket full of borrowed money and a head full of rain, Jimi sits in a pub in London, where he has traveled for no reason except that London isn't Boston, or Manhattan, or the college where Jimi wasted four years, or the brick alleyways where he's puked and made love and crawled and laughed at the night. Jimi Banks is 23: went to school as a hockey player and now just skates: diseased and innocent, criminal and pure. His summer love that started on a posh island crashed on the dusty mainland. And his best friend is dead. From London in a cloud of hashish and tobacco, booze and beer. to Paris to stay with the daughter of a banker who wants to be a patron of the arts. back to London, broke again, where a man named Rosie declares his undying love and it's all right with Jimi if it just comes with a meal.Jimi Banks is dodging shadows. There's his friend, Ray, who hung himself in a gorge outside Aspen; his family who won't return his phone calls anymore; and the vast quantities of booze he has to drink to call them. Out of money, out of favors, Jimi is just not out of places to run.

Etherington-Smith, Meredith. The Persistence of Memory: A Biography of Dali. Da Capo Press, New York, 1995.

Price: US$17.50 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: xxvi, 465 pages, [24] pages of plates, illustrations (some colour); 23 cm. Tight, clean copy. "Surrealist painter, author, filmmaker, lecturer, performance artist, charlatan, genius, clown, Salvador Dali; (1904-1989) once asked himself, 'Where does the deep and philosophical Dali begin, and where does the loony and preposterous Dali end?' This evenhanded but exacting biography, based on interviews, unpublished letters, and previously unavailable archives, explores the relationship between his eccentric life and the hallucinatory imagery of the paintings that, like the soft watches, have become twentieth-century icons. The author penetrates the artist's self-mythologizing facade to reveal the man behind the outrageous mustache and cryptic canvasses: his Catalan childhood; his relationships with Garcia Lorca, Bunuel, Breton, Picasso, Miro, de Chirico, Man Ray, Ernst, and Eluard; Dali's fixations, phobias, and Surrealist pranks; and his bizarre marriage to Gala--muse, business manager, nymphomaniac, gold digger, and finally tormentor. With reproductions of sixteen Dali paintings, The Persistence of Memory offers an unrivaled tour of the absurd and haunting landscape of Dali's life. / Meredith Etherington-Smith is the author of a biography of Jean Patou, the European editor of Town & Country, and the editor of Christie's International Magazine." - Publisher. Price: US$18.69 + shipping

Condition: New

Description: Paperback. A classic collection of stories all told on the skin of a man from the author of Fahrenheit 451. If El Greco had painted miniatures in his prime, no bigger than your hand, infinitely detailed, with his sulphurous colour and exquisite human anatomy, perhaps he might have used this mans body for his artYet the Illustrated Man has tried to burn the illustrations off. Hes tried sandpaper, acid, and a knife. Because, as the sun sets, the pictures glow like charcoals, like scattered gems. They quiver and come to life. Tiny pink hands gesture, tiny mouths flicker as the figures enact their stories voices rise, small and muted, predicting the future. Here are sixteen tales: sixteen illustrations the seventeenth is your own future told on the skin of the Illustrated Man. Here are eighteen visions of humankind's destiny. A mixture of magic, imagination and truth. Condition: New

Description: Paperback. The strange and wonderful tale of mans experiences on Mars, filled with intense images and astonishing visions. The classic work that transformed Ray Bradbury into a household name. Written in the age of the atom when America and Europe optimisitcally viewed the discovery of life on Mars as inevitable, Bradburys 1940s short stories of a brutal, stark and unforgiving martian landscape were as shocking and visionary as they were insightful. The Martian Chronicles tells the story of humanitys repeated attempts to colonize the red planet. The first men were few. Most succumbed to a disease they called the Great Loneliness when they saw their home planet dwindle to the size of a pin dot. Those few that survived found no welcome. The shape-changing Martians thought they were native lunatics and duly locked them up.More rockets arrived from Earth, piercing the hallucinations projected by the Martians. People brought their old prejudices with them and their desires and fantasies, tainted dreams. These were soon inhabited by the strange native beings, with their caged flowers and birds of flame. The strange and wonderful tale of mans experiences on Mars, filled with intense images and astonishing visions. The classic work that transformed Ray Bradbury into a household name. Description: Softcover Book Condition: Almost as new A biography of the modernist writer, Gertrude Stein. Known today for her experimental writings, she was drawn into the heart of the literary and artistic world of early 20th century Paris. She soon became a central figure in this elite group, hosting such figures as Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Georges Braque, and F.Scott Fitzgerald at her salon in the rue de Fleurus. Stein was painted by Picasso and Vallotton, and photographed by Man Ray and Cecil Beaton. This portrait of Stein documents her life. The photographs are arranged chronologically, interwoven with extracts from her work, and with letters and journals, and with the memoirs of those who knew her. An introduction gives further biographical information, and detailed chronologies precede each section. This is a book full of wonderful photographs. Condition: Very Good

Description: xx, 424 pages, illustrations; 25 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Remainder mark/tail edge. Dust jacket, with light edgewear, protected in a mylar book cover. "In 1932, against the troubled background of the Depression, the American art community had its first glimpse of the revolutionary art of the Surrealists. Combining a fascination for Freud's new symbolic language of dreams with a radical leftist utopianism, the Parisian movement galvanized an emerging American avant-garde. New galleries opened to exhibit the 'terrifying,' 'insane' works of Surrealist artists, and new magazines sprang up to publish a startling crop of Surrealist poetry, criticism, and vociferous attacks on mainstream culture and politics. Only four years later, a major Surrealist exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art catapulted Surrealism into the cultural limelight and the attention of high-fashion magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. Soon the art of Man Ray was selling cologne and swimwear and the manic Salvador Dali was designing windows for Bonwit's and a pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Even Andre Breton and his circle, exiled in Manhattan during World War II, were unable to assert control over this new kind of Surrealism. If anything, their cultural dislocation in these years gave Americans the edge in developing new Surrealist concepts and new movements such as Abstract Expressionism. In this innovative and vividly written cultural history, Professor Dickran Tashjian tells the story of Surrealism's remarkable sea change during its years in America, from a fiercely leftist, strongly literary, avant-garde movement into an apolitical, almost exclusively visual style. Exploring both 'high' and 'low' cultural perspectives, he shows how the American avant-garde selectively filtered and reshaped European Surrealism to meet its own agendas, and how it in turn was reinterpreted, de-politicized, and commercially exploited by mainstream American culture and the fashion/advertising industry." - Publisher. Description: Paperback. The teaching on the seven rays can enable all true servers to work with greater skill and effectiveness in their chosen field of activity. As Alice Bailey wrote, a study of the rays will mean that ".we shall have a practical method of analysis whereby we can arrive at a right understanding of ourselves as ensouling entities, and at a wiser comprehension of our fellow men. We can then deal more intelligently with ourselves, with our children and with our friends and associates. We shall find ourselves able to co-operate more wisely with the plan as it is seeking expression at any particular time". Description: Paperback. Romulus Ledbetter wasn't always homeless. He once was a devoted husband, father, and musician with a bright future. He now forages for food in the trash cans of the city's better neighborhoods and wages a strenuous one-man war against Cornelius Gould Stuyvesant, an evil -- and imaginary -- power broker who is responsible for society's ills, as well as the sinister Y- and Z-rays that are corrupting humankind. Then one wintry night, Rom finds a corpse at the mouth of his cave that rouses his well-defined sense of ethics and launches him on an obsessive quest for answers. Forced to reconnect with society, Rom leaves his world and journeys through a spiraling web of clues and hunches, straight into a sinister den of money, temptation, and murder--otherwise known as the "civilized" world. A homeless man who lives in a cave in New York City wages a one-man battle against an evil--and imaginary--power-broker responsible for society's ills. When he finds a corpse outside his cave, he launches an obsessive quest for answers that leads him back to the bowels of the "civilized world". "Nothing short of brilliant . . . a great read".--Los Angeles Times. This item is printed on demand. Cathy Guisewite. Understanding the "Why" Chromosome. Andrews Mcmeel Publishing, LLC, 1995.

Price: US$28.42 + shipping

Condition: New

Description: nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'My job isn't to revolutionize anything. My job is to give women a sense of relief, to acknowledge what they're struggling with.' -Cathy GuisewiteLike women around the globe, Cathy has been constantly puzzled by her romantic relationships. From Irving to Simon to Alex, the men in Cathy's life have provided a never-ending source of confusion and amusement ever since the strip began in 1976. 'If men's hair falls out,' our weary heroine laments, 'it's because there's nothing in there for it to hold onto.' It's no wonder, then, that cartoonist Cathy Guisewite's Cathy collection should be called Understanding the 'Why' Chromosome. In this hilarious book, Cathy outdoes herself in witty revelations about men, food, Mom, and career: Cathy's four basic guilt groups. Cathy epitomizes the highs and lows felt by distaff women throughout the world. In Understanding the 'Why' Chromosome, Cathy's found a new challenge: a boyfriend who's a decade younger than she. Fitness fanatic Alex, who's sensitive and not particularly ambitious, introduces Cathy to an entirely new relationship angst, then introduces her to his hip, young mother. Cathy's baffled by the age difference, but is just as stumped when he proposes. 'What's wrong with our relationship the way it is now 'she wails when Alex finally pops the question.Throughout her trials and tribulations, Cathy's friends keep her sane. There's happily married Charlene, the office loudspeaker; exhausted Andrea, mother of Zenith and Gus; her well-meaning mom and dad; Cathy's unrealistic boss, Mr. Pinkley; and bouncy little Electra, Cathy's canine alter ego. Her frequent and frustrating shopping excursions also give rise to an enormous wave of female recognition 'Skip the clothes and just shove a Stairmaster through the curtain,' Cathy deadpans.Cathy Guisewite is an enormously talented cartoonist who has won numerous awards for her strip and animated television shows. Her countless fans trust Cathy to constantly express the right blend of humor and observation almost as if she had x-ray vision into the human condition.

Condition: Fine

Description: 174 S. : überw. Ill., Karte, mit zahlr. farbigen Abbildungen / Fotos, Zustand: geringe Gebrauchs- u. Lagerspuren, sehr gutes Exemplar. Text / Sprache: Englisch ; Mit zahlreichen Fotos. A land of many contrasts, Kenya straddles the r1equator on the eastern side of Africa. The jagged, snow-covered peaks of Africa's second highest mountain, Mount Kenya, dominate the fertile central highlands, where much of the world's tea and coffee is grown. Ancient man lived beside the lakes of the Great Rift Valley, and took his first upright steps on its volcanic sands. Modern man lives beside those same lakes, looking no doubt with equal wonder at the spectacle of two million flamingos, a -blaze of pink around the water's edge. Kenya's national parks and reserves are among the world's most famous and include the rolling savannas of the Masai Mara, where the world's largest animal migration takes place each year. More than 1.2 million wildebeest follow their traditional circuit in search of new grass, crossing the Mara River with daring leaps into its swirling waters. Amboseli is well renowned, with its herds of elephants against the magnificent backdrop of Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. The country is also home to more than a thousand species of birds, many of which migrate from central Europe. The lndian Ocean forms Kenya's eastern boundary, and even the inexperienced snorkeller will find a breathtaking variety of colourful fish and corals in sheltered lagoons. Scuba divers explore beyond the protective reef, sharing the water with dolphins, whale sharks, turtles and giant manta rays. 19786 ISBN 1853683779 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1250 29 cm, gebundene Ausgabe mit Original-Umschlag,

Strongly recommended for its many fine, previously unpublished photographs and for the frequent opportunities the author gives his subjects to talk that talk. ?Stanley Dance, JazzTimes. A vivid oral history. The book lucidly describes how each of the trademark styles of the region's music centers?including Dallas's earliest Deep Ellum blues, Houston's honkers, San Antonio's Tex-Mex norteno and Austin's current country-blues rock?developed. The real stars, however, are the performers. ?Rolling Stone. The integration of first-person accounts with carefully researched background and well laid-out pictures brings these [blues makers'] stories to life. MEETING THE BLUES is a personal and engaging document that ought to be also an enduring one. ?Blues Access. "In the Rainmaker, Grisham returns to the courtroom for the first time since A Time To Kill, and weaves a riveting tale of legal intrigue and corporate greed. Combining suspense, narrative momentum, and humor as only John Grisham can, this is another spellbinding read from the most popular author of our time. Grisham s sixth spellbinding novel of legal intrigue and corporate greed displays all of the intricate plotting, fast-paced action, humor, and suspense that have made him the most popular author of our time. In his first courtroom thriller since A Time To Kill, John Grisham tells the story of a young man barely out of law school who finds himself taking on one of the most powerful, corrupt, and ruthless companies in America and exposing a complex, multibillion-dollar insurance scam. In his final semester of law school Rudy Baylor is required to provide free legal advice to a group of senior citizens, and it is there that he meets his first clients, Dot and Buddy Black. Their son, Donny Ray, is dying of leukemia, and their insurance company has flatly refused to pay for his medical treatments. While Rudy is at first skeptical, he soon realizes that the Blacks really have been shockingly mistreated by the huge company, and that he just may have stumbled upon one of the largest insurance frauds anyone s ever seen and one of the most lucrative and important cases in the history of civil litigation. The problem is, Rudy s flat broke, has no job, hasn't even passed the bar, and is about to go head-to-head with one of the best defense attorneys +and powerful industries in America."

Bern: Benteli Verlag, 1995.

Price: US$33.15 + shipping

Description: 263 Seiten. Mit zahlreichen s/w Fotografien. Schwarzer Original-Leinwand-Einband und illustrierter Original-Schutzumschlag. Gutes Exemplar. 30x25 cm + Leonard von Matt (* 14. März 1909 in Stans, Kanton Nidwalden; † 12. DeLoach, Cartha D.. Hoover's FBI: The Inside Story by Hoover's Trusted Lieutenant [FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING]. Regnery Publishing, Washington, D.C., 1995.

Price: US$35.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Fine unread condition blue boards/black cloth spine/copper spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Biographical Note; Index and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. "The FBI is the world's most acclaimed law enforcement agency and one often cloaked in an aura of mystery and intrigue. J. Edgar Hoover, serving as Director of the FBI for over five decades, has left a profound and lasting legacy on this most celebrated institution. Only the few who were part of J. Edgar Hoover's inner circle know the truth about his controversial years of authoritarian rule and the organization's inner secrets. Deke DeLoach, author of Hoover's FBI: The Inside Story by Hoover's Trusted Lieutenant, was privy to Hoover's thoughts and actions during the most tumultuous years of the FBI. Throughout the '60s, Deke DeLoach was the number three man in the Bureau - outranked only by Hoover and Clyde Tolson - and one of Hoover's most trusted deputies. For this reason, his precise, highly readable narrative is the most authentic account ever written of the FBI. Hoover's FBI answers the questions that have plagued modern history most - the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Martin Luther King, Jr., the FBI crusades against organized crime and the Communist party, Hoover's disputed sexual orientation, and the "secret files" Hoover allegedly kept to blackmail hostile members of Congress. DeLoach paints a portrait of Hoover different from any yet revealed - and one that will ring true to objective readers, while disappointing both rabid Hoover haters and uncritical Hoover worshippers. DeLoach reveals the most gripping pursuits - both flattering and unflattering - of the Bureau itself: How the FBI, through Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas, had the court obtain the truth regarding wiretapping and microphone usage in a major case; How the FBI confirmed the truth about the Valachi papers; How the agents captured James Earl Ray, and How they cracked the famous "buried alive" kidnapping case. Hoover's FBI offers dramatic insights into the FBI - how it worked under Hoover's rule and how it must work in any era. It sets the record straight about J. Edgar Hoover once and for all and provides a gripping narrative of a modern government agency caught on a tightrope between presidential administrations and the limits of the law." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

George Soros. Soros on Soros (Paperback). John Wiley & Sons Inc, New York, 1995.

Price: US$37.35 + shipping

Condition: New

Description: Paperback. George Soros Ends the Speculation "The outcome [of this book] is a summing up of my life's work. . . As I finish the book, I feel I have succeeded."-George Soros from the Preface Critical praise for Soros on Soros "If you have ever wanted to sit down for a candid conversation with a phenomenal financial success, George Soros's book provides the opportunity. You will meet a complex man and a first-rate mind."-Henry A. Kissinger "The best expert on Soros is undoubtedly George Soros! After all, who is better equipped to tell us what he really thinks and how he thinks, a matter of some importance given the fact that he has translated a remarkable personal financial success into a truly generous and historically significant effort to promote postcommunist democracy." -Zbigniew Brzezinski "The best X-ray of the mind of the master yet." -Barton M. Biggs "George Soros brings a lot more to the world of finance than the intuition and nerve of a born trader-and in Soros on Soros he's no longer bashful about telling us about it. A philosopher at heart, George attributes his success at investing to a theory of the interaction of reality and human perception. What really drives the man now, with a personal fortune beyond all personal need, is a different kind of strategic investing-investment to build in Eastern Europe the kind of open societies he came to value in his own life." -Paul A. Volcker Financial guru George Soros is one of the most colorful and intriguing figures in the financial world today. Now in Soros on Soros, readers are given their most intimate and revealing look yet into the life and mind of the one BusinessWeek dubbed, "The Man Who Moves Markets." Soros on Soros interweaves financial theory and personal reminiscence, political analysis and moral reflection to offer a compelling portrait of the world (and its markets) according to Soros. In an interview-style narrative with Byron Wien, Managing Director at Morgan Stanley, and with German journalist Krisztina Koenen, Soros vividly describes the genesis of his brilliant financial career and shares his views on investing and global finance, politics and the emerging world order, and the responsibility of power. Speaking with remarkable candor, he traces his progress from Holocaust survivor to philosophy student, unsuccessful tobacco salesman to the world's most powerful and profitable trader and introduces us to the people and events that helped shape his character and his often controversial views. In describing the investment theories and financial strategies that have made him "a superstar among money managers" (The New York Times), Soros tells the fascinating story of the phenomenally successful Soros Fund Management and its $12 billion flagship, Quantum Fund. He also offers fresh insights into some of his most sensational wins and losses, including a firsthand account of the $1 billion he made going up against the British pound and the fortune he lost speculating on the yen. Plus: Soros's take on the devaluation of the peso and currency fluctuations internationally. He tells of the personal and professional crises that more than once threatened to destroy him and of the personal resources he drew upon to turn defeat into resounding victory. And he explains his motivations for establishing the Soros Foundation and the Open Society Institute through which he worked to build open societies in postcommunist countries in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Finally, turning his attention to international politics, Soros offers keen insights into the current state of affairs in Russia and the former communist bloc countries and analyzes the reasons behind and likely consequences of the West's fa Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
