Disillusioned journalist Steve Toast covers the Elvis beat' for the paper, and editor Stan Barfyskowicz sends him out on a spicy story: a mysterious man named Coates claims that the CIA murdered Elvis after James Earl Ray told him of a CIA plot to assassinate Jimmy Carter for refusing to stick with the Company program. Coates thinks the CIA wants to silence him permanently, a claim that Toast finds more convincing after the interview, when he himself is tailed and shot at. And in a sense, as the father of Douglas MacArthur, his influence extends well into our own century. The General's General is the first biography of Arthur MacArthur, and it clearly establishes his importance in American history. Arthur MacArthur's military career began as a scrawny seventeen-year-old lieutenant, his commission owed not to any evidence of ability but to family connections. Cline focuses on women and the climate in which most women must try to make sense of their sexuality. Neither gender is offered celibacy as an option for themselves as ordinary mortals--either temporarily or as a regular practice. Cline, who comes from a Jewish family and spent a number of years in a Catholic convent school, has a firm grasp of the messages to girls from both traditions--insistence on marriage in the one; the idealization of virginity in the other.Cline suggests that if we are repeatedly told that sexual pleasure is evil or dangerous and can only be had under certain stringent conditions (the old script) or that sexual pleasure is obligatory (the new script), it is still a script. Celibacy, for many, is partly a challenge to *both* of these scripts and partly the logical extension of a need for plain ol' solitude, friendships, and creative work. One of the big problems, especially for men but also for many women, is that emotional intimacy and genital intimacy have been so intertwined for so long that it can be difficult even to imagine meaningful emotional connections without genital intimacy. Celibacy, therefore, conjures up an image not simply of *genital* inactivity or quiescence, but of emotional isolation. Some women, on the other hand, are learning to see autonomy as "prioritizng oneself within a context of intimate relationships," or as Cline puts it, "connected autonomy." Cline's last chapter, "Creative Solitude," might actually be the key to the entire conundrum. Anthony Storr, whom Cline quotes several times, suggests that parents would do their children a great favor by consciously helping them learn to live creatively and comfortably with solitude, starting with being "alone in the presence of another." Cline also gives a vivid account of her own work on developing the capacity for solitude. The capacity for solitude might even be one the best predictors of positive relationships in which, as Antoine de St.-Exupery says, "love is not gazing into each other's eyes but looking together in the same direction." Description: For about ten years, beginning with the Armory Show in 1913, New York City was host to the odd-sounding accents and queerer-looking paintings and constructions of a mixed bag of European and American avant-gardists. Besides the inscrutable figure of artist Marcel Duchamp, the European contingent included such iconoclastic visitors as the playboy painter Francis Picabia, the composer Edgard Varese, the diplomat Henri-Pierre Roche (author of Jules et Jim and adviser to the extraordinary collector John Quinn), and painters Albert Gleizes and Jean Crotti. Among the Americans were the photographer/painter/constructor Man Ray, the Precisionist painter and Fortune photographer Charles Sheeler, the Futurist Joseph Stella, and the Pennsylvania artists Charles Demuth and Morton Schamberg. New York Dada is the first comprehensive study devoted exclusively to the accomplishments of these vanguard artists in America in the period 1915-23 - among the most underappraised, though most influential periods in the history of American art. From Wikipedia: "William Patrick Kinsella, OC, OBC (born May 25, 1935) is a Canadian novelist and short story writer who is well known for his novel Shoeless Joe (1982), which was adapted into the movie Field of Dreams in 1989. His work has often concerned baseball, First Nations people, and other Canadian issues.According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, W.P. Kinsella's literary output primarily consists of two cycles of work dealing with two fictive universes: those dealing with baseball and those depicting the indigenous people of Canada. Kinsella's first published book was called Dance Me Outside (1977), which was a collection of seventeen short stories about the lives of people on a First Nations reserve in his native Alberta. Kinsella was criticized for writing from the point-of-view of Native people, appropriating their voice. Kinsella rejected the criticism on the grounds that a writer has the license to create anything they so chose. These stories use the ineptness of the white bureaucrats on reservations as background, and Kinsella defended them, saying, "It's the oppressed and the oppressor that I write about. Shoeless Joe remains Kinsella's most famous work. The book was mildly controversial in that it used a living person, the reclusive author J.D. Salinger, as one of its main characters. Kinsella, who had never met him, created a wholly imagined character (aside from his being a recluse) based on the author of The Catcher in the Rye, a book that had great meaning to him when he was a young man. To get a feel for Salinger, he re-read his body of work. "I made sure to make him a nice character so that he couldn t sue me." In an example of metafiction, he named his protagonist in Shoeless Joe "Ray Kinsella", a character from Salinger s uncollected story A Young Girl in 1941 with No Waist at All. Salinger had also used the surname shared by writer and protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye (Holden Caulfield's friend Richard Kinsella). Crystallographic methods, primarily x-ray diffraction analysis, pene trated into materials sciences, molecular physics, and chemistry, and also into may other branches of science. Later, electron and neutron diffraction structure analyses became important since they not only complement x-ray data, but also supply new information on the atomic and the real structure of crystals. Electron microscopy and other modern methods of investigating matte- optical, electronic paramagnetic, nuclear magnetic, and other resonance tech niques - yield a large amount of information on the atomic, electronic, and real crystal structures. Crystal physics has also undergone vigorous development. Many remark able phenomena have been discovered in crystals and then found various practical applications. Other important factors promoting the development of crystallography were the elaboration of the theory of crystal growth (which brought crystallography closer to thermodynamics and physical chemistry) and the development of the various methods of growing synthetic crystals dictated by practical needs. Lisa Fonssagrives (born Lisa Birgitta Bernstone; 17 May 1911 4 February 1992), was a Swedish fashion model widely credited with having been the first supermodel. She worked with fashion photographers including George Hoyningen-Huene, Man Ray, Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, George Platt Lynes, Richard Avedon, and Edgar de Evia. She married Parisian photographer Fernand Fonssagrives in 1935; they divorced in 1949 and she married another photographer, Irving Penn, in 1950. She went on to become a sculptor in the 1960s and was represented by the Marlborough Gallery in Manhattan.
