Description: New York. 1956. Grove Press. 1st Paperback Edition. The hard bound limited edition was only 500 copies. Very Good in Wrappers. Translated from the French by The Author. 120 pages. paperback. E-39. keywords: Literature Ireland France. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Samuel Beckett is an Irishman, born in Dublin, graduated from Trinity College, who now lives in Paris and writes in French, although his earlier books, including the novel MURPHY, were written in English. His play, WAITING FOR GODOT (En attendant Godot), opened in Paris in 1953 and was met with tremendous acclaim and has since successfully played in many countries in Europe. In England, the London Times termed it ‘ . one of the most noble and moving plays of our Generation. ' The three postwar French novels, MOLLOY, MALONE and L'INNOM- MABLE, form a trilogy which has established an important place for Beckett in the French literary world. Jean Blanzat in Le Figaro Litteraire has said ‘The writing, the organization, the originality of the imagery, all bear out the publisher's claim that this is indeed one of the major works of the postwar era.' When MOLLOY, the first to be translated in this country, was published, one critic, Glenn Edinger, said ‘The writing of MOLLOY is hardly believable. Those who find the philosophy of the novel pessimistic or who find the characters distasteful, still will find beauty in the writing. The sense of the value of each word is wonderfully maintained. The paradox of lucid confusion is exemplified in MOLLOY: the saying that style is meaning is demonstrated beautifully. MOLLOY is bound to be controversial. But Beckett seems to be on author to be reckoned with.' inventory #19316
