The book was first published in the UK as a paperback original (PBO) by Panther Books in 1960, preceded by the American first edition, which was also a PBO, published by Avon Books in 1959. An autobiographical work about Jack Kerouac's early relationship with his teenager sweetheart, Mary Carney, in Lowell, Massachusetts from 1938 to 1939. ***Near fine in pink cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. Tail of spine just slightly creased. Top edge and fore-edge of text-block very lightly foxed. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Very slight foxing to the front free endpaper, but interior pages clean. No tears. No creases. Spine tight. ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which has been price-clipped by the publisher, with a £2.25 A. D. Ltd. price sticker to the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete with virtually no faults, apart from being price-clipped. No chips, tears or creases. No fading. The back panel is just very slightly marked [being a white background] ***205mm x 135mm. 155 pages. ***'"Maggie Cassidy" is a haunting and tender recreation of Kerouac's first love. Jack Duluoz is sixteen, at once gauche, passionate and football-crazy, and Maggie Cassidy is a sexually precocious high-school girl a year older than he: "her mouth pouted, soft, rich, red, her black curls adorned sometimes the snow-smooth brow; up from her lips came rosy auras hinting all her health and merriness." ***Kerouac's love for Maggie (in real life Mary Carney) was to haunt him for the rest of his short life, becoming in his mind the symbol of unfulfilled dreams of happiness and domesticity. And another fantasy - of becoming a great football hero - accounts for some of the most vivid and exciting passages in the book. In evoking so movingly the heightened emotions of adolescence and his own awakening sexuality, Kerouac once again defines the experiences of a whole generation'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the first UK hardback edition, very hard to find now, and more desirable than the original paperback edition of 1960. Of interest to collectors of Jack Kerouac, The Beats,1960s counter-culture, and iconic American twentieth century literary first editions. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
