Description: Stated Second Edition. The text was copyrighted by The Mark Twain Company in 1935. In the same year Harper & Brothers copyrighted the illustrations. The introduction by Clara Clemens is titled How My Father Mark Twain Translated Struwwelpeter For His Children. The book is rated only Fair. As you can see, the paper on the spine is gone, the underlying material is present and solid. The spine looks pretty straight and the book is solidly bound. There are no cracks or spaces between any of the pages or between the covers and any of the pages. There is some light rubbing on the cover edges, a thin bit of rub-through in one place on the front covers middle edge, rub-through at each of the four corners. I don't see any soiling or staining on the page edges. The pages are in pretty good condition. They do have some soiling, mostly some spots that look like thumbprints. Two facing pages have spotting or foxing, and I saw one other page with some of the same. The bottom corner of one page has a thin crease above it. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere.

Price of $4.00 on the front flap of the dust jacket. Illustrated by a frontispiece and three additional plates, two of which are facsimiles of Twain's handwriting. Prepared for publication with comments by Albert Bigelow Paine. ANB, Scott Michaelsen, "Paine, Albert Bigelow (10 July 1861-09 April 1937)". BAL 3556. Albert Bigelow Paine was Mark Twain's literary executor and wrote a famous three-volume biography of Twain's life and times. Paine had a very close and personal relationship with the author, as he moved his family into Twain's home in 1906. He helped conduct Jean Clemens' funeral, and cared for Samuel Clemens during his final illness. He helped manage the Clemens' estate and the day-to-day work of the household. Paine's writings greatly shaped the public's understanding of Twain's character and how it changed throughout his life. His editorial work on Twain's notebooks in this volume was one of his last major literary publications, completed just two years before he died. These writings give the reader a sense of Clemens' literary creativity and creative process. Twain's signature humor and literary style shine brightly in his private writings, a fascinating book illuminating the personal side of Mark Twain. A Near Fine book with a faint spot of yellowing to the front flyleaf; jacket is Very Good with traces of edge wear and a small chip to the rear panel.
