Description: 4to. Red cloth with black spine lettering and pictorial stamping. 56pp. Numerous color illustrations, color pictorial endpapers. Very good. Mild binding wear and faint cup circle to front board. A tight and decent first edition of Bemelmans' fifth and final title in this series before his death at age 64 in 1962, though two titles were released decades later. Only flaw would be the original toddler-owner's enthusiasm for the subject, expressed in the form of extra-illustrations (i.e., scribbling) in purple crayon on pages 54-55. The back has a 1-inch pen mark. Price shows $3.50. Dust jacket is in a new protective Brodart cover. Boards have little to no wear. Board corners are sharp and square. Spine is tight. Pages are clean and crisp. Signed by Ludwig Bemelmans on the half-title page. No other writing. Minor soiling on a couple of pages. The sixth book in the Madeline series.
