DULAC, Edmund. Lyrics: Pathetic & Humorous from A to Z.. Frederick Warne & Co, London, 1908.

Price: US$704.68 + shipping

Description: Alphabet book of rhymes brilliantly illustrated and conceived by the artist and master illustrator of the golden age of book illustration, Edmund Dulac (1882 - 1953). E was an exquisite elf Who enjoyed being quite by herself, She delighted to play In a elegant way With the things that she found on a shelf. K was a kind-hearted King Who once taught a bird how to sing, By knocking a pan With the knob of a fan, And a kettle tied onto a string. U was a youthful Undine In the kingdom of ultramarine. Often week after week She would play hide and seek, In the weeds with an ugly sardine. Born in the French city of Toulouse, Edmund Dulac rose to prominence shortly after moving to London when he was twenty two. Dulac's first commission was to illustrate the classic gothic English novel, Jane Eyre, originally written by Charlottle Bronte in 1847. The assignment heralded the beginning of a major deal with J.M. Dent's London publishing house and E.P. Dutton & Co. in New York resulting in a lovely set of books titled The Novels of the Sisters Brontë in Ten Volumes (1905). The Anglicisation of Dulac's name begins from this date with ‘Edmond' changed to read ‘Edmund'. Dulac amended his signature to reflect the adjustment, not returning to his birth name for many years until entering a successful stamp design in the competition for a commemorative stamp celebrating France's victory against Germany in World War II. Depicting the iconic French revolutionary, Marianne, Dulac's stamp was accepted by Charles de Gaulle and issued in March, 1945. It has since been reprinted on several occasions throughout the twentieth century. Quarto, bound in gilt-decorated pictorial boards with bevelled edges, 24 enchanting colour plates, near fine copy.

DULAC, Edmund. Lyrics Pathetic & Humorous from A to Z.. London: Frederick Warne :, First edition,, 1908.

Price: US$877.61 + shipping

Description: 4to., unpaginated, with 24 fine colour plates, illustrated by Edmund Dulac, each featuring a letter of the alphabet (x,y & z are combined) with an accompanying printed limerick printed on one side only, pictorial endpapers, bound in the original linen-backed pictorial boards. An unusally VG+ bright copy with only slight wear to extreme corner tips, with the gutta-percha style binding still holding remarkably well and with no damage whatsoever to front or rear hinges. Born in 1882 France, Edmund Dulac, a gifted teenage artist, made it through two years of studying law before the boredom of law school and the winning of a prize at the Ecole des Beaux Arts tipped him into an art career and he became a full time art student. His arrival in London in 1904 just as the "colour separation" process of reproducing color plates was invented fortuitously placed him at the birth of the illustrated gift-book. Edmund Dulac became one of the five major "Golden Age" gift book illustrators. A gifted caricaturist, Dulac was at his best in Lyrics Pathetic and Humorous.

Price: US$1105.14 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: FIRST EDITION. 4to. (10.8 x 8.5 inches). Fully illustrated with 24 wonderful full colour plates (XYZ appear together on one page) within a border and above a humourous verse, plus 2 double page decorative line drawings, printed in different shades of brown on parchment paper, for the endpapers. Colour pages are printed on one side only. A bright and clean copy throughout. Publishers original grey/dark green paper covered, bevelled edged, boards with lettering and illustration to the front board by Dulac, printed in Gold, white, orange and light green. Rear board with circular design printed in white, gold and green. Plain yellow cloth spine. Some minor marking to the spine but overall a lovely clean, tight, near fine copy. Among the artists best and most imaginative works, this title is also one of the scarcest books that he illustrated. The humour in his verse is far surpassed by the comical imagination of the plates and shows the lighter side of Dulac's nature. The plates have all the decoration and style of those painted for the Arabian Nights and Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam but also have a sense of fun equal to that of William Heath Robinson. Dulac at his very best. -- Hughey 18.
