"Although I have left the strict line of historical truth in many places, the animals in this book were all real characters. They lived the lives I have depicted, and showed the stamp of heroism and personality more strongly by far than it has been in the power of my pen to tell. I believe that natural history has lost much by the vague general treatment that is so common. What satisfaction would be derived from a ten-page sketch of the habits and customs of Man' How much more profitable it would be to devote that space to the life of some one great man. This is the principle I have endeavored to apply to my animals. The real personality of the individual, and his view of life are my theme, rather than the ways of the race in general, as viewed by a casual and hostile human eye." --E.T.S.

Ernest Seton-Thompson (1860-1946) was an author, wildlife artist, naturalist, and a co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). He lived in a number of places including his native England and later Canada and the United States. Seton-Thompson later changed his name to Ernest Thompson Seton. Seton-Thompson is perhaps best-known for his book, _Wild Animals I Have Known_, which contains his infamous story about the wolf named Lobo, and other works of animal fiction. Seton-Thompson was also the founder of the Woodcraft Indians who were later renamed the Woodcraft League of America. Today, the only active group of the Woodcraft League are the Woodcraft Rangers in Los Angeles. A collection of short stories about animals. This book merges fact with fiction as the animals are presented in anthropomorphized form, similar to animals characters in folk tales, yet are described in such accurate detail as to suggest they are based on the author's direct observations of nature and animals in reality. Excerpt from author's "Note to the Reader": "My chief motive, my most earnest underlying wish, has been to stop the extermination of harmless wild animals; not for their sakes, but for ours, firmly believing that each of our native wild creatures is in itself a precious heritage that we have no right to destroy or put beyond the reach of our children."
