Description: This 4.75 x 6.25, 192-page book is in good condition. The covers are the detractive condition of this little volume as the smooth bluish cloth has completely worn from the four corners and the boards are exposed. The half-leather spine certainly shows wear but the paper label is still fully intact and secure. The interior hinges of this volume are still tight and secure and the paper contents of the six monthly editions are really in very good if not near fine condition although there is some browning to some of the paper. There is a paper announcement affixed to the ffep with the Roycrofter emblem and declaring that this volume is presented with compliments of the Philistine. All in all a nice example of the quality work of Elbert Hubbard and his Roycrofters outlet. 192 pages.

Roycrofters, East Aurora. 1901 217/940 Limited edition Signed Copy. 38pp Illustrated Hardback Roycroft was a reformist community of craft workers and artists which formed part of the Arts and Crafts movement in the USA. Elbert Hubbard founded the community in 1895 in the village of East Aurora, Erie County, New York, near Buffalo. Participants were known as Roycrofters. The work and philosophy of the group, often referred to as the Roycroft movement, had a strong influence on the development of American architecture and design in the early 20th century. The name Roycroft was chosen after the printers, Samuel and Thomas Roycroft, who made books in London from about 1650-1690. And beyond this, the word roycroft had a special significance to Elbert Hubbard, meaning King's Craft. In guilds of early modern Europe, king's craftsmen were guild members who had achieved a high degree of skill and therefore made things for the King. The Roycroft insignia was borrowed from the monk Cassidorius, a 13th century bookbinder and illuminator. Elbert Hubbard had been influenced by the ideas of William Morris on a visit to England. He was unable to find a publisher for his book Little Journeys, so inspired by Morris's Kelmscott Press, decided to set up his own private press to print the book himself, founding Roycroft Press. His championing of the Arts and Crafts approach attracted a number of visiting craftspeople to East Aurora, and they formed a community of printers, furniture makers, metalsmiths, leathersmiths, and bookbinders. A quotation from John Ruskin formed the Roycroft "creed":"A belief in working with the head, hand and heart and mixing enough play with the work so that every task is pleasurable and makes for health and happiness". The inspirational leadership of Hubbard attracted a group of almost 500 people by 1910, and millions more knew of him through his essay A Message to Garcia. In 1915 Hubbard and his wife, noted suffragette Alice Moore Hubbard, died in the sinking of RMS Lusitania, and the Roycroft community went into a gradual decline. This copy, unlike the open edition, is bound in tan suede yapp binding with two blind stamped panels and gilt titling to the front. The frontis complete with tissue guard is a sketch of the composer Franz Liszt believed to be the work of Samuel Warner. The title page and five vignettes throughout the book have been hand coloured. The limitation page has been signed and numbered 217/940 by Elbert Hubbard. The stock is printed on Roycrofts hand made paper. A fine copy of a very important book. Ref H3 Size: 38pp

Description: Handmade book. Limitation page states there were 940 copies made. There is a space where this book could have been numbered, but it wasn't. Printed by the Roycrofters, a handicraft community founded about 1895 by Elbert Hubbard. Hubbard had been a very successful soap salesman, but wasn't satisfied with his life, so in 1892 he sold his interests in the soap company and briefly enrolled at Harvard. Disenchanted, he dropped out and set off on a walking tour of England, where he briefly met William Morris and became enamored of Morris' Arts-and-Crafts Kelmscott Press. When Hubbard returned to America, and tried to find a publisher for a series of biographical sketches he had written called "Little Journeys" he was unsuccessful so he published them himself with his 'Roycrofters." There is a small half inch by half inch portion of the tissue guard covering the frontispiece that is missing. Also, the red ink outlining the first letter S and J of Samuel Johnson has faded. Otherwise, this is a great example of the hand made publications from the Roycrofters workshop.

Complete year's run of 12 issues (nine of which have loosely inserted portrait plates of the composer). Booklets are physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Magazines are not new or in "new" condition. Bindings gently age worn, mostly light signs of handling and time but nothing offensive or severe, booklets remains overall attractive as an object. Paper is gently toned, various mostly light signs of time and age, internally still clean, tight, sound internally. Still attractive on the shelf. The booklets displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in overall nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive.
