He was born at Bath in 1852, the son of William Gregory, himself born and bred in Bath, and his wife Margaret, who came from Cardiganshire. William Gregory was a master bookbinder, then living at 14 York Street and employing two men. By 1871, the family now living at 11 Prior Park Cottages, George Gregory was himself a bookbinder. In 1878 he married Isabel Marriott Clement, a pianist who had once lodged with another Bath bookbinder, John Maggs. The couple set up house at 1 Upper East Hayes Terrace, Walcot their first and only child being born the following year. The 1881 Census entertainingly lists the occupation of two-year-old George Bernard Gregory as little beggar . Gregory had widened the family business to include bookselling as well as bookbinding, and by 1888 or earlier he was in occupation of what were to become well-known premises at 5 Argyle Street, on the corner of Grove Street the family living above the shop. In an 1894 advertisement he styled himself as an English, Foreign, Colonial and General Book Merchant, Library Buyer and Exporter , issuing monthly catalogues, and with upwards of 100,000 volumes always on sale . Active in local politics, he sought election to the Bath Board of Guardians in 1904 as the advocate of economy combined with efficiency . Via ABA The 1911 Census recorded him, still at Argyle Street, as a bookseller (rare and antiquarian) by appointment to Queen Alexandra and by now he was also issuing catalogues of prints. At about this time he also offered for sale his own extraordinary collection of illuminated manuscripts the diligent quest of a long life a collection he believed unmatched outside the British Museum and the Bodleian, and certainly the most remarkable collection ever offered by an antiquarian bookseller. The story features Amy Dorrit, youngest child of her family, born and raised in the Marshalsea prison for debtors in London. Arthur Clennam encounters her after returning home from a 20-year absence, ready to begin his life anew. The novel satirises the shortcomings of both government and society, including the institution of debtors' prisons, where debtors were imprisoned, unable to work, until they repaid their debts. The prison in this case is the Marshalsea, where Dickens’ own father had been imprisoned. Dickens is also critical of the lack of a social safety net, the treatment and safety of industrial workers, as well the bureaucracy of the British Treasury, in the form of his fictional "Circumlocution Office". In addition he satirises the stratification of society that results from the British class system." (from Wikipedia)

Browne) including the frontispiece and vignette title-page. 8vo, bound in contemporary three-quarter tan calf over boards, lettered in gilt on a green morocco lettering piece, spine with raised bands lined and decorated in gilt. xiv, 623 pp. A handsome copy, very well preserved, spine a touch mellowed, one original wrapper bound in, some usual mellowing to plates, a fine, unwashed, clean and honest copy. FIRST EDITION FROM THE ORIGINAL PARTS. Bound in a handsome antique binding. Little Dorrit was published in 19 monthly installments, each two illustrations by Phiz. Each installment cost a shilling, with the exception of the last, a double issue, which cost two shillings. It is a work of satire on the shortcomings of the government and society of the period. Much of Dickens' ire is focused upon the institutions of debtors' prisons—in which people who owed money were imprisoned, unable to work, until they repaid their debts. The representative prison in this case is the Marshalsea where the author's own father had been imprisoned.

Price: US$1750.00 + shipping

Description: Octavo, twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts, 40 inserted plates with illustrations by Hablot K. Browne, original pictorial blue-green wrappers printed in black. First edition, parts issue. Part XV is first issue with "Rigaud" for "Blandois," pages 467, 470, 472, and 473. "Gothicism infiltrates this novel. The sneaking, insinuating, grasping Rigaud recalls a long gallery of diabolic foreign villains populating earlier Gothics. Little Dorrit herself and Arthur Clennam resemble those put-upon innocents from tradition. Old Mrs. Clennam, with her mysterious secrets from the past, shut up, crippled, in her gloomy room in an altogether gloomy mansion, controls, or tries to control, events in the lives of those under her command. Flintwinch, her faithful old retainer, combines familiar traits of the good and bad servant, helpful at times, hindering at others. His wife's 'dreams' add a touch of other-worldliness to this novel of imprisonment within physical and spiritual walls." - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 2-32. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 2-32. Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 307-330. Part I lacks three ads at rear; "Norton's Camomile Pills," "James Gilbert's Publications" and "The National Review"; Part II is complete, but only outside front wrapper is printed (a printing error; a correct back cover has been supplied). Parts III-XIX/XX are complete and collate as per Hatton and Cleaver. Part I has some loss along lower spine; Part II, "Little Dorrit Advertiser" loose, some loss to spine, front wrapper partially detached along spine, closed tear in front wrapper with old internal tape mend; Part III, binding thread broken, several leaves loosened but present; Part VI lacks binder's thread; Part XIII, "Ask Mamma" slip torn. A few mild chips to spines of several other parts, some plates are foxed, several of the "dark" plates are darkened, mostly at margins, first two parts are very good and good respectively, the others are very good to nearly fine, some unopened. A nice copy overall. Enclosed in a custom quarter red morocco slipcase. (#132457)

Dickens, Charles. Little Dorrit.. Bradbury and Evans, London, 1857.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, firstÂissue of one of Dickens’ most outstanding novels Octavo, bound in full morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt medallion portrait of Dickens on the front panel, gilt signature on the back panel, inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. In fine condition. With 40 illustrations by Hablot Knight Brown (“Phiz”), including frontispiece and vignette title page. In fine condition. An exceptional presentation. “In Little Dorrit Dickens mounts his single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society; against its government, against its financiers, against its artists and even against its ordinary citizens who, at least in Bleeding Heart Yard, believed that …foreigners were always immoral… that foreigners had no independent spirit…” (Ackroyd, 758). Perhaps unsurprisingly, many reviewers reviled the book upon its publication. Dickens’ friend Hans Christian Andersen advised the author to ignore the critics: “They are forgotten in a week, and your book stands and lives” (Ackroyd, 780). And indeed, Little Dorrit does: not only a commercial success in its day (poor press notwithstanding) but also esteemed now as a “wonderfully rich novelâ€" rich in ideas, rich in characterization, rich in incident, and written in a richly imaginative prose… Many [modern] critics regard it as Dickens’ masterpiece” (Watts, 108).

Haywood elegantly reproduces in color the Phiz plate "Flora's Tour of inspection" found opposite to page 519. Helen R. Haywood (1908-1995), English painter and children's book illustrator Helen R[iviere]. Haywood was the granddaughter Robert Riviere, founder of the great bindery which executed this lovely binding. Her mother, Mabel, was Riviere's ninth and last child. She was born in England in 1908 but was taken as a child to Chile, where her father, an engineer, worked on the trans-Andean railway. She remained in Chile until she was approximately 15 years old. Her experiences were recounted in an unpublished novel,"Childhood in Chile." Miss Haywood was a keen student of science and an amateur naturalist and anthropologist. Many of the books she illustrated for the publisher Hutchinson & Co., London, were keenly observed and scrupulously accurate depictions of plants, birds and animals. When commissioned to do illustrations for a children's book on dinosaurs, her research into the skin colors she subsequently chose for her dinosaur illustrations was cited by the Royal Academy of Sciences. Haywood was also a practitioner of the art of fore-edge painting. She became acquainted with the art form through an uncle who was associated with the Bayntun-Riviere Bindery of Bath. She did several fore-edge and double fore-edge paintings on commission every year from the 1930s to the 1970s for Inman's Books, an antiquarian book dealer in New York City. She died in Bournemouth, England in 1995. "Little Dorrit originally appeared in twenty numbers, bound in nineteen monthly parts, the last part forming a double number, from December 1855 - June 1857. It was published in book form on May 30, 1857" (Smith). Provenance: Louise Dalton Kirk 1936; Purchased by David Brass Rare Books from a private California collection 2007; sold to Randal Moscovitz 2008. Smith I, 12. Eckel pp. 82-85.

Eckel, 82-85. Smith I:12. Gimbel (Podeschi) A141. Dickens' most outspoken and outstanding novel, with 40 illustrations by Phiz, including frontispiece and vignette title page. "In Little Dorrit, Dickens mounts his single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society; against its government, against its financiers, against its artists and even against its ordinary citizens who, at least in Bleeding Heart Yard, believed that 'foreigners were always immoral that foreigners had no independent spirit" (see Ackroyd, 758). Perhaps unsurprisingly, many reviewers reviled the book upon its publication. Dickens' friend Hans Christian Andersen advised the author to ignore the critics: "They are forgotten in a week, and your book stands and lives" (Ackroyd, 780). A "wonderfully rich novel, rich in ideas, rich in characterization, rich in incident, and written in a richly imaginative prose. Many critics regard it as Dickens' masterpiece" (see Watts, 108). Sprache: english.
