They are among the best-known storytellers of folk tales, popularizing stories such as "Cinderella" ("Aschenputtel"), "The Frog Prince" ("Der Froschkönig"), "Hansel and Gretel" ("Hänsel und Gretel"), "Little Red Riding Hood" ("Rotkäppchen"), "Rapunzel", "Rumpelstiltskin" ("Rumpelstilzchen"), "Sleeping Beauty" ("Dornröschen"), and "Snow White" ("Schneewittchen"). Their first collection of folk tales, Children's and Household Tales (Kinder- und Hausmärchen), began publication in 1812. Illustrated By: Arthur Rackham Arthur Rackham RWS (19 September 1867 – 6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator. He is recognised as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolour, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Rackham's 51 colour pieces for the early American tale Rip Van Winkle became a turning point in the production of books since – through colour-separated printing – it featured the accurate reproduction of colour artwork. His best-known works also include the illustrations for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. Brothers Grimm; Arthur Rackham. Little Brother Little Sister. London: Constable & Co., 1917.

Price: US$249.95 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Original 1917 first edition of the Arthur Rackham illustrated Little Brother Little Sister. The book is in overall good condition with some signs of wear and age. It is complete with all 12 tipped in color plates. There is some degree of creasing to the corners of most of the plates, though that seems to be pretty common for this title. Most of the creasing is pretty minor and not too noticeable. The most pronounced is to the frontispiece. The tissue guards are no longer present. The covers have some light wear. The binding is good and sound. There is a page or two with a very minor marginal tear which does not affect the text. The interior is generally nice and clean with just the occasional light bit of foxing & grubbiness. Along with that there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection such as a creased page corner, minor interior crack, other tiny chip or tear, etc. Generally though, it's a good copy. The book measures approximately 10 1/4 inches by 7 3/4 inches and is 251 pages long.********This book will require additional shipping charges if being sent outside of the United States********

".it was during these years that he illustrated a new Brothers Grimm title, Little Brother and Little Sister which is in effect one of his crowning achievements. In these twelve colour plates we find the most astonishing versatility of style, and an exquisite pitch of execution. The style ranges from the delicate to the virtual burlesque caricature. On the one hand is an example of pre-Raphaelite, infinitely tender portrayals of womanhood, such as 'The True Sweetheart', or the delicate realism of Maid Maleen and her waiting woman escaping from the terrible tower of her father. Yet within the same book we find the classic Rackhamerie of the gnome with his beard caught in the cleft of the semi-anthropomorphized tree, appealing to Rose-red and Snow-white for help and the Hassell-like custard-pie of the three soldiers and the long nose. This is one of the few books illustrated by Rackham from which it would be possible to select any single-colour picture in order to demonstrate Rackham's art at its finest." (Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp. 116-117). Lattimore and Haskell, p. 46. Riall, p. 129.
