Price: US$17.50 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: This is a book that takes us back to the planning stage of commercial aviation in the 1930s. Anne Morrow Lindbergh writes with such heart and humanity that you feel a part of each moment she describes. She and her husband exhibited exceptional daring, heroism, intelligence and discipline as they stoically endured hardships and discomforts. It is good to be reminded of human capacity left to experience and instinct minus electronic equipment. It is uplifting* reading about these two people flying in a small seaplane for thousands of miles across land and ocean to stake out routes for future passenger travel.

Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea is a popular inspirational book, reflecting on the lives of American women. Listen! The Wind is a 1938 book by the American writer Anne Morrow Lindbergh. It tells the story of Lindbergh's and her husband Charles Lindbergh's 1933 flight from Africa to South America across the Atlantic Ocean. The book focuses on the last ten days of the flight, when weather conditions and illness caused trouble for the couple. The book has a foreword and map drawings by Charles Lindbergh. The title is taken from the British poet Humbert Wolfe's poem "Autumn Resignation". When the Lindberghs were waiting for enough wind to commence the flight in Gambia, Anne had kept reciting two lines from the poem: "Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves". Just like Lindbergh's first book, North to the Orient, Listen! The Wind became a bestseller and was among the ten best selling non-fiction books in the United States for two years in a row. It received the National Book Award for Nonfiction. First edition [Stated]. Presumed first printing.

Lindbergh, Anne Morrow; Charles A. Lindbergh (fwd., map drawings). Listen! the Wind [INSCRIBED? - Possible Association Copy?]. Harcourt, Brace and Co., New York, 1938.

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Red cloth, spine panel lettered and front cover airplane device in gilt. Text block edges a bit dulled by age, otherwise essentially as issued, though lacking dust jacket. Stated first edition. xii,275 pp., illus. w/ maps. Signed on half-title "For The Morgans / Anne," and while the signature bears a passing resemblance to that of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, who frequently inscribed copies to personal friends simply as "Anne," we have doubts that this example is genuine. More often than not, Listen! the Wind was inscribed by both Lindberghs, given that Charles executed the map illustrations, and this example is written on a slant, rather than the author's typical horizontal inscription. However, the inscription is intriguing insofar as it is "For the Morgans," which would most likely be Anne's sister Constance and her husband, Aubrey Morgan, who had married in 1937 (the year before publication), three years after the death of Aubrey's first wife, Elisabeth, who was also Anne and Con's older sister. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

LINDBERGH, Anne Morrow (with maps by Charles A. Lindbergh). North to the Orient and Listen! The Wind (two volumes in slipcase). Harcourt Brace, New York, 1938.

Price: US$275.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Octavo, 2 volumes in slipcase. A fresh, fine set, unread and very well-preserved. Both books with rich deep blue topstains and in fine silver dust jackets, only a tinge scrunched at the crowns. In the publisher's slipcase, just a touch shelfworn. This set is very difficult to find in commerce, and since Harcourt Brace usually stated first editions during this period, we presume that both volumes are later printings, and the jackets and slipcase made for this special issue. In any event, a scarce set, particularly in such unusually bright condition.

Description: First edition of this classic work. Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers. With a foreword and map drawings by Charles A. Lindbergh. With a lengthy autograph note entirely in the hand of Anne Morrow Lindbergh which reads, "From Marcel & Elise 'Love is to the soul what the would is to the body - an increase, an additional soul.' 'To love means to see, and seeing belongs to the order of grace. To see means to recover a being in his glory. To re-establish him in his order of origin, which is super-natural. Love is the Sacrament of the Real Presence. (About caring for many people) Is is lying to have a soul for each soul as the bee-hive has a call for each bee? (Charity) Without a certain indulgence toward Evil, a certain weakness for the sinner, you cannot love soul. Will Elise always be without this weakness which is charity? And you cannot be a Christian without charity whatever the quality of your faith & the degree of your purity. 'I feel that married love has nothing to do with sympathy. With sensuality, with passion, with friendship, or with love. It alone is adequate to itself & cannot be reduced to one or the other of these different feelings. It has its own nature, its particular essence & its unique mode which depends on the couple that it brings together.' Merry Christmas!" Near fine in a very good dust jacket. The note is in near fine condition.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh (1906-2001) met the celebrated American aviator Charles Lindbergh in 1927, when her father Dwight Morrow, the American ambassador to Mexico, invited Lindbergh to visit the country. They married in 1929, she soon learnt to fly under his tutelage, and then became her husband's trusted co-pilot; indeed, in 1930, she became the first woman to receive a United States Glider Pilot Licence – one of numerous 'firsts' as a female pilot. In 1931 the Lindberghs undertook a historic series of flights in their specially-adapted Lockheed Sirius, Tingmissartog, travelling across Alaska and Canada to Japan and China, in order to explore new routes for airmail. Anne Lindbergh recorded the experiences in her best-selling book North to the Orient (New York: 1935) – which won the inaugural National Book Award for Nonfiction – and in 1933 the Lindberghs made a survey flight around the North Atlantic Ocean: '[t]he purpose of the flight was to study the air-routes between America and Europe. At that time, the air-routes of the world were entering their final stages of development. The countries had already been crossed and the continents connected. It remained only for the oceans to be spanned. Their great overwater distances constituted the last major barrier to the commerce of the air' (p. v). After crossing the northern part of the Atlantic from New York to Copenhagen, the Lindberghs flew south to Africa and then crossed the southern part of the Atlantic, and Listen! The Wind describes the flight across the southern Atlantic. The book reflects the collaborative nature of the flight, and the body of the book is Anne Morrow Lindbergh's work, complemented by Charles Lindbergh's foreword, appendix, maps, and dustwrapper design. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's exploits earned her the National Geographic Society's Hubbard Gold Medal in 1934.Bennett, A Practical Guide to American Book Collecting (1663-1940), p. 237.

Description: Octavo, 275pp. A crisp, clean copy, very good or better, in the publisher's red cloth. Spine gently sunned, faint ring stain to rear board, but otherwise a sharp copy. In a very good dust jacket (supplied), with some short tears and a small chip on the rear panel. [in Charles' hand]: "and Charles Lindbergh Cranbrook, 1943." The Saarinens' blindstamp appears on the title page. According to the archives of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, the Lindberghs spent the summer of 1943 at Cranbrook, where Anne took modeling and sculpture classes. Charles had come to be familiar with the area a year earlier, when in April 1942 he was invided by Henry Ford to assist in the conversion of facilities at Willow Run Airport into a manufacturing facility for the war effort. By this time, Eliel Saarinen had recently retired as the founding President of Cranbrook, but he and Lola still lived in their specially designed home right near the campus. A significant association copy between two intellectual and highly influential American families.
