Kipling was strongly influenced by Indian culture and used the elephant, signifying his affinity with India, along with a swastika, an Indian symbol of good luck, as his personal emblem on the covers and flyleaves of many editions of his books. With the rise of Nazism, Kipling ceased to use the swastika. Upper external page edges are gilt. Spine is sun darkened. Small bookseller's label on back paste down. Some foxing on external text fore-edges. Internal text is clean and text block is snug. Brown paper dust jacket with blue print and graphics. Dust jacket is sunned overall but more so on spine and extremities. Head of jacket spine has several small tears and chips, stabilized by an old tape repair on the reverse side.
