Condition: Near Fine

Description: Near fine, first edition book in very good plus dust jacket. Dark red cloth covered boards with Kipling's small round elephant and swastika emblem stamped in gilt on the front panel. Kipling was strongly influenced by Indian culture and used the elephant, signifying his affinity with India, along with a swastika, an Indian symbol of good luck, as his personal emblem on the covers and flyleaves of many editions of his books. With the rise of Nazism, Kipling ceased to use the swastika. Upper external page edges are gilt. Spine is sun darkened. Small bookseller's label on back paste down. Some foxing on external text fore-edges. Internal text is clean and text block is snug. Brown paper dust jacket with blue print and graphics. Dust jacket is sunned overall but more so on spine and extremities. Head of jacket spine has several small tears and chips, stabilized by an old tape repair on the reverse side. Loss of 3/4" by up to 1/4" along edge at tail of jacket spine. Fore-edge corner tips are rubbed with minimal loss on the lower tips and 1/4" or less on the upper tips. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description. Additional photos available at your request. English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist Rudyard Kipling's major works include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901) and many short stories and poems. Kipling was born in India, which inspired much of his work and his innovative stories for children have become timeless classics. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907. Limits and Renewals contains fourteen stories, three of which appear here for the first time: "The Tie," "Aunt Ellen," and "Uncovenanted Mercies," each with introductory, and sometimes supplemental verses. These include eighteen poems which are here published for the first time.
