Faulkner, William. LIGHT IN AUGUST. Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, (New York), 1932.

Price: US$2200.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Faulkner's seventh novel, a naturalistic treatment of Southern racial paranoia and transgressive violence. Written at the height of his artistic maturity, LIGHT IN AUGUST has been recognized since its first publication as one of Faulkner's major works, less experimental in style than some of its predecessors but no structurally complex or thematically rich. Asked about the novel's religious imagery, Faulkner did not deny its presence, but replied that "the people to me come first. The symbolism comes second." An attractive copy of one of the 20th century's great novels. 8'' x 5.5''. Original orange-lettered tan cloth. Orange topstain. In original unclipped ($2.50) dust jacket. Faulkner, William. Light In August.. Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, New York, 1932.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue, with first printing statement on copyright page, and “Jefferson” for “Mottstown” on page 340, line 1; first-issue binding, lettered in blue and orange. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Petersen A13a; Howard A13.1a; Massey 103. A sharp example. One of William Faulkner’s most admired and accessible novels, Light in August reveals the great American author at the height of his powers. Lena Grove’s resolute search for the father of her unborn child begets a rich, poignant, and ultimately hopeful story of perseverance in the face of mortality. It also acquaints us with several of Faulkner’s most unforgettable characters, including the Reverend Gail Hightower, plagued by visions of Confederate horsemen, and Joe Christmas, a ragged, itinerant soul obsessed with his mixed-race ancestry. Powerfully entwining these characters’ stories, Light in August brings to life Faulkner’s imaginary South, one of literature’s great invented landscapes, in all of its unerringly fascinating glory. "No man ever put more of his heart and soul into the written word than did William Faulkner. If you want to know all you can about that heart and soul, the fiction where he put it is still right there" (Eudora Welty).

With an interesting association inscription regarding the publisher penciled onto the front pastedown. With an illustrated title-page. 8vo, publisher’s original beige buckram lettered in orange on the upper cover and in blue on the spine, in the very scarce original dustjacket. 480 pp. A fine copy, the book in fine condition with just a hint of shelf wear to the foot of the spine, the very scarce dustjacket is well preserved with a bit of mellowing evident along the edges and to the spine panel and a closed tear to the back spine fold and to the front flap fold. The jacket has the correct $2.50 price and listing of Boyle, Kay as the first author on the back cover as is proper for the original first issue. LIGHT IN AUGUST is one of Faulkner's greatest books. The novel's central themes of race, religion and human nature have not, over time, been diminished in their potency. The book presents one of Faulkner’s most balanced works, discussing the negative and positive forces in life as it focuses on the relationship between men and women and between races. One of America's greatest modern writers, Faulkner was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1950 for his literary accomplishments. In his acceptance he made the brief but important statement "that man will not merely endure; he will prevail. because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. [it is] the writer’s duty to write about these things."

Price: US$7500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A Fine copy of the book in about Fine jacket and original publisher's glassine. Book Fine and unused with just a few spots of dust to the orange top-stain. Dust jacket exceptionally bright and fresh, but with slight wear to the edges of the flaps. Original glassine with a long tear at the front flap fold and some overall toning. Written on the verge of the outbreak of World War II, William Faulkner's Light in August examines complex moral issues and race dynamics within a conservative and prejudiced southern landscape. The story follows two strangers, Lena Grove and Joe Christmas, who move to Mississippi. Lena, a pregnant woman looking for the father of her unborn child, struggles for acceptance as Joe grapples with his suspected black heritage. Stylistically modern, Faulkner's drama is non-linear and paints an unforgiving portrait of his protagonists and southern culture. In a contemporary review, The New York Times called Faulkner "a stylist of striking strength and beauty," who had secured his place "in the very front rank of American writers of fiction.". Fine in about Fine dust jacket.

Four major characters lead frustrated lives: a part-Negro who passes for white and finally ends the victim of a mob; a preacher whose religion doesn't meet reality; a lonely woman; a migratory worker" (Coan, America in Fiction, p.58). Description: First edition, first issue, with first printing statement on copyright page, and “Jefferson” for “Mottstown” on page 340, line 1; first-issue binding, lettered in blue and orange. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Eric Dawson William Faulkner Oxford 3 October 1934." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Petersen A13a; Howard A13.1a; Massey 103. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed, with only two examples appearing at auction in the last 90 years.
