Description: Life is Good & Good for You in New York: Trance Witness RevelsParis, aux Editions du Seuil, Album Petite Planète n°1, septembre 1956, 285x230mm, 192 pp., pleine toile noire de l’éditeur titrée au dos, pages de gardes photographiques.Roth 140-142 ; William Klein Centre Georges Pompidou 1983 p.21 à 61; Parr & Badger 243; Auer 365.

One of the scarcest most important sought after titles in the photographic literature of the second half of the twentieth century, it is regarded as one of the most influential and groundbreaking photo-books. Published in 1956, its visual energy captured the rough-and-tumble streets of New York?a city Klein once described as "the world capital of anguish"?like no photo-book had done before or since. Robert Capa famously declared that if your photographs were no good it was because you were not close enough to your subject, and in Klein's New York people press themselves up against the lens, dance around it, pull faces, pretend to shoot each other?a visual chaos which is rigorously organized by Klein's one American eye and one European eye, as he once characterized his style. One of the most scarce, most important, & most sought after titles in photographic literature of the late twentieth century, it is regarded as one of the most influential and groundbreaking photo-books. Published in 1956, its visual energy captured the rough-and-tumble streets of New York, a city Klein once described as "the world capital of anguish", like no photo-book had done before or since. Robert Capa famously declared that if your photographs were no good it was because you were not close enough to your subject, and in Klein's New York people press themselves up against the lens, dance around it, pull faces, pretend to shoot each other, a visual chaos that is rigorously organized by Klein's one American eye and one European eye, as he once characterized his style. (Roth 101). This is the French Edition, which is the true first edition of this book. The title page, contents page and two pages of text at the back of the book are in English and French. In an interview in the January 2013 issue of Sight & Sound magazine Klein recounts: Well, I didn t know how to do a book. I was just discovering photography and once I had all these pictures, I showed them to editors in New York and nobody thought it was worthwhile to do a book with these photographs. They said, What is this shit? I came back to Paris and discovered there was a series of travel books called Petite Planète. I called them up and got an appointment and I went to this office which looked like NASA. Chris Marker was there with a laser gun in his belt, and he saw the photographs and said, We ll do a book! In fact he said, We ll do a book or I quit! This was the first of several collaborations, Klein and his wife Janine later appeared as men of the future in Marker s seminal film La Jetée (1962), with Klein providing the English narration. Life Is Good & Good For You In New York represents Klein’s attempt to capture the kinetic quality of 1950s New York as he saw it, ‘the noise, the dirt and the madness.’ Rejecting traditional ideas of sharpness, brightness, and composition, Klein also experimented with the layout: having use of the Vogue darkrooms and access to their Photostat machine allowed him to try many ideas, cutting and pasting and playing with scale and sequencing quickly and easily. ‘Traditional photography books put me to sleep. They were untouchable, academic, and boring. For me, design, graphics, and layout were almost as important as the photographs themselves. And that’s why I did everything I could to create a new kind of visual book’. Klein along with Robert Frank were the principal progenitors of street photography.

The Open Book 165 f. Parr/Badger I, 243. Roth, The Book of 801 Books 140 ff. - Erste Ausgabe in England ("Imprimé en Suisse"). Der erste Druck der ersten Ausgabe erschien bei Editions du Seul in Paris. - Mit eigenhändiger Widmung von W. Klein "To Paul & his sister Bailly / Happy New York, William Klein". - "By virtue of its preface, written by Jack Kerouac, Robert Frank's The Americans is usually regarded as the epitome of the Beat photobook. But William Klein's magnum opus, Life is good for you and good in New York Trance witness Reveals: Trance Witness Revels, a book with Beat mantra for a title, surely has the edge in this regard. This is partly because it was the earlier model, partly because it is less political and more exuberant, and impotantly, because its conception is so complete - photographs, layout, design, topography, 'found' ephemera coalescing into what is in effect one of the first great 'Pop' books. . Klein's masterpiece reminds us that much great, serious art is often about play, archieved simply by experimenting with the possibilities of the material. Forget trance and witness - the revels are the thing" (Parr/Badger). - "With no interest from American publishers, Klein went back to Paris and set to work on a graphic design that was as aggressive and idiosyncratic as its photos. "I saw the book as a tabloid gone berserk, gross, over-inked, brutal layout, bull-horn headlines," he wrote in its radically revised 1995 edition. "This is what New York deserved and would get." Published in France, Italy, and England, but not in America, Life is good for you and good in New York was a sensation" (A. Roth). - Schutzumschlag am Kapital mit unauffällig restaurierter Fehlstelle, sehr gutes Exemplar. Sprache: französisch.

After serving in the army towards the end of the Second World War, Klein moved to Paris in 1949 on the G.I. Bill and spent six years living there after studying painting, including a brief time with Fernand Léger. In 1954, Alexander Lieberman invited him back to New York to join the Vogue art department as a design assistant. Klein returned to New York. He didn't take the role with Vogue but spent eight taking photographs whilst rediscovering New York. Rejecting traditional ideas of sharpness, brightness, and composition, Klein experimented with the layout using the Vogue darkrooms and Photostat, which allowed him to try many ideas, such as cutting, pasting, and playing with scale and sequencing, quickly and easily. Neither Vogue nor any American publisher was interested in these photographs. Klein returned to Paris, where he showed them to Chris Marker, then an editor at Éditions du Seuil. The publication of Life is Good & Good For You In New York was the first of several collaborations with Chris Marker. Six years later, Klein and his wife Janine appeared as 'men of the future' in Marker's seminal film La Jetée (1962), with Klein providing the English narration.
