Flat spine with gilt titles and illustrated gilt label. , First edition, the second state, with the caption on p. 443 corrected to \"St. Charles Hotel. Life on the Mississippi is a memoir by Mark Twain of his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War, and also a travel book, recounting his trip along the Mississippi from St. Louis to New Orleans many years after the War. The book begins with a brief history of the river as reported by Europeans and Americans, beginning with the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1542. It continues with anecdotes of Twain\'s training as a steamboat pilot, as the \'cub\' of an experienced pilot. He describes, with great affection, the science of navigating the ever-changing Mississippi River in a section that was first published in 1876, entitled \"Old Times on the Mississippi\". In the second half, Twain narrates his trip many years later on a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans. He describes the competition from railroads, and the new, large cities, and adds his observations on greed, gullibility, tragedy, and bad architecture. He also tells some stories that are most likely tall tales. Simultaneously published in 1883 in the United States and Great Britain, the book is said to have been the first submitted to a publisher as a typewritten manuscript., Size : 8vo (223x143mm), Illustrated profusely with over 300 illustrations Very good condition, a handsome copy, text and illustrations clean.

Exceptionally clean and tight; virtually unread. This is Blanck's intermediate B, with the tailpiece of Twain in flames* on p.441 not present, and with caption on p.443 reading "The St. Charles Hotel". *This drawing was removed beause Twain’s wife found it offensive. With light touches of wear to the top and bottom of the spine ends and at the corners. A collector's copy of this classic Twain work which showcases his life as a riverboat pilot. Life on the Mississippi begins with a brief history of the river as reported by Europeans and Americans, beginning with the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1542.[2] It continues with anecdotes of Twain's training as a steamboat pilot, as the 'cub' (apprentice) of an experienced pilot, Horace E. Bixby. He describes, with great affection, the science of navigating the ever-changing Mississippi River in a section that was first published in 1876, entitled "Old Times on the Mississippi". Although Twain was actually 21 when he began his training, he uses artistic license to make himself seem somewhat younger, referring to himself as a "fledgling" and a "boy" who "ran away from home" to seek his fortune on the river, and playing up his own callowness and naïveté.In the second half, Twain narrates his trip many years later on a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans, shortly followed by a steamboat journey from New Orleans to St Paul (with a stop at his boyhood home town of Hannibal, MO). He describes the competition from railroads, and the new, large cities, and adds his observations on greed, gullibility, tragedy, and bad architecture. He also tells some stories that are most likely tall tales. (Wikipedia) First Ediiton with matching dates of 1883 on the title and copyright pages. Second issue without "Twain in flames" on p 441.

Description: First Edition, Early State. Blanck's intermediate B, with the tailpiece of Twain in flames on p.441 not present, and with caption on p.443 reading "The St. Charles Hotel". Profusely illustrated throughout. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original decorated cloth with black stamped decorations and gilt pictorial vignettes on the upper cover, the spine decorated in black and with a large gilt pictorial vignette, lettered in gilt, a.e.g., protected in a fine slipcase 624 pp. A very fine copy, uncommonly fresh and well preserved, the cloth is a rich brown with bright gilt and only the lightest evidence of age, internally sound and very clean. A superior copy. ONE OF TWAIN’S BEST BOOKS AND A RARE AND HANDSOME COPY IN ORIGINAL CLOTH OF THIS IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. Twain writes about his home and his muse-the great Mississippi. "As a dwelling place for civilized man it is by far the first upon our globe." (preface) In this largely autobiographical narrative, Twain gives us a vivid account of his experiences on the great river. LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI is brilliant firsthand account of the steamboat age, the science of river piloting, and the life of the river itself from the point of view of those who made their living navigating it. The book is also an account of the changes of time, both to a man and to a way of life. The first part of the book recounts Twain's youthful days as a steamboat pilot before the American Civil War. Later in the book Twain recounts a trip along the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans many years after the war, taken by a now mature and successful author. LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI is a truly wonderful book and a valued piece of the American legacy.

Part memoir, part travelogue, it expresses the full range of Twain's literary personality, and remains the most vivid, boisterous and provocative account of the cultural and societal history of the Mississippi Valley, from 'the golden age' of steamboating to the violence wrought by the Civil War.

Hoaxes and exaggerations palmed off by pilots and other natives along the way upon supposed ignorant strangers; stories of gamblers and obsolete robbers; glimpses of character and manners; descriptions of scenery and places; statistics of trade; Indian legends; extracts from the comments of foreign travelers, -- all these occur, interspersed with two or three stories of either humorous or tragic import, or of both together" (The Atlantic Monthly, September 1883). Twain, Mark (Samuel Langhorne Clemens). Life on the Mississippi (Bound in leather!) A splendid first edition with more than 300 illustrations (Leather-bound issue!). James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, 1883.

Price: US$5000.00 + shipping

Description: A very handsome copy bound in the publisher's original full-calf binding with moroccan labels on the spine. Internally, very clean and tight; virtually unread. The front hinge has been reglued and is cracked along the marbled endpapers. This is the first issue with the tailpiece drawing of Twain in flames emanating from an urn on p.441, but with the second issue with the caption on p. 443 reading "The St. Charles Hotel". With occasional scuffing along the edges and some small pieces of leather missing at the top and bottom of the spine ends. A collector's copy of this classic rarely found in the original leather binding. (Wikipedia) First Edition with matching dates of 1883 on the title and copyright pages. First issue with "Twain in flames" on p 441.

Written at an angle across the memo, "Continue the subscription for another year", SIGNED "S. L. Clemens" and dated "Sept. 23, 1889". The memo paper is almost tissue thin, was folded and pasted to a heavier grade backing. The note was extracted, folds, tears and chips were repaired, and it is now stabilized with a Japanese paper backing. The volume has undergone restoration to the leather on the spine ends and corners, and the hinges have been reinforced. The gilt is partially rubbed away on the spine ends and the cones are bumped.
