Frontispiece of Peter Porcupine after a caricature by Gillray, colored through stencils at the Curwen Press. Pastedown with armorial bookplate of Sir John Wormald. Dreyfus 41. ◆Edges a little rubbed, one corner slightly bumped, endpapers with offsetting from binder's glue, two leaves with very small punctures to the margins, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and bright throughout. This is a selection of writings by pro-democracy English-American pamphleteer and journalist William Cobbett (1763-1835), who wrote under the nom de plume "Peter Porcupine." As noted in the prospectus, "though passages from the works now presented have been used by his biographers, there has been hitherto no attempt such as this to let Cobbett speak, and speak at length, for himself. . . . The genetic history of his opinions has its own importance and interest; but the general reader will probably take more pleasure in the lively picture of himself which is presented incidentally by this most personal and self-revealing of controversialists." The introduction provided here by G. D. H. Cole is his first association with Nonesuch in a professional context, though he had been made familiar to Francis Meynell through academic and society ties.

Remarks of the pamphlets. Talleyrand: a spy. Farewell to America. A court-martial. A retrospect. The pieces were selected "to make a sort of autobiography of William Cobbett up to the time of his return from America in 1800." (Not listed at Tomkinson) Cobbett, political writer and farmer in 1791, wrote an anonymous pamphlet entitled The Soldier's Friend (1792), a passionate indictment of the harsh treatment and poor pay of the common soldier. At the same time Cobbett attempted to launch a court martial against the offending officers, and when this threatened to rebound on Cobbett himself, he and his new wife, Nancy Anne Reid (1774–1848), fled to France for six months and subsequently to the United States, where they remained from 1792 to 1800. Description: A selection of works by William Cobbett. 'Peter Porcupine' was a pseudonym used by Cobbett for his controversial political writings and pamphlets. With an illustrated frontispiece, hand coloured through stencils. With an introduction by G D H Cole. Limited edition, number 396 of 1800 copies printed for sale. Published by the Nonesuch Press. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. Their aspiration was for their publications to be aligned with the same aesthetic standards as the private press movement. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press to design the books, but had them printed by commercial printers. In doing so, books with the quality of a fine-press were produced, but available to a wider audience at lower prices. In a quarter cloth binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the head and tail of spine. Patches of rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Offsetting to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned due to paper used. Several gatherings to the start and end of the work remain uncut to the head of pages. Just the odd light spot. Very Good Indeed
