The signed first edition of this Limited Edition study of the life and work of eighteenth century painter of miniatures, Ozias Humphrey, illustrated throughout with full plate and vignette reproductions of his works, a small number of which are reproduced in colour. With only four hundred copies produced, this work is signed by the author, George C. Williamson, to the title page, and dated November 15th 1936.With numerous pieces of ephemera, the majority of which are dated between 1936 and 1942:To the front free endpaper appears a reproduction of a Humphry work, accompanied by two short letters, both addressed to Arthur Jaffe. The first letter is from the private secretary of Williamson himself, and on his letterhead, and thanks Jaffe 'for the photograph of the Ozias Humphry which has come safely to hand, and he is very glad to possess it, and grateful to you for sending it'.The second letter is from J H Andrew at the Royal Academy of Arts, and discusses a miniature from Humphry depicting the 2nd Lady Holland, and an exhibition held at the Academy in 1879. A loosely inserted note on the letterhead of Holland House, Kensington, discusses a miniature of Lady Holland produced in 1794, of which Jaffe supplied a photograph.Among the numerous items loosely inserted are copious notes referring to this volume and the work of Humphry, two notes on the letterhead of Pall Mall's Athanaeum Club, and a letter from Jaffe addressed to Williamson regarding the work of Humphry. The work is annotated throughout with notes regarding both the work of Humphry and Williamson's text, with annotations appearing to both plates and pages, and two pages of notes tipped in.An incredibly detailed study of a leading English painter of portrait miniatures, supplemented with a wealth of curious ephemera revealing the prior owner's enthusiasm for Humphry's work.
