Description: 229 pages. First edition which consisted of only 2,130 copies. Original green cloth, spine reading "Author of Walden" etc. as noted in BAL, binding B. Protected in mylar. Binding is in great shape with no fading to the dark green spine. Gilt contrast on spine is strong. Tips with minor wear, top and bottom of spine has very minor wear, no chips or tears. Binding has a couple of slight stains on the rear cover. Interior is very clean and tight, no cracks at interior gutters. A book plate is on the front paste down with minor repairs where glue caused small holes in the free front end paper. No other markings of previous ownership. Overall an attractive copy. BAL 20116.

Chipped with loss at head and tail of spine. Spine faded from sun exposure. Light wear to extremities with minor scuffing along edges and corners. Bookplate of Chas. E. Rickes on paste-down. Front gutter tender with splitting. Front end page is chipped at edges. Light toning to edges of textblock with minor instances of foxing. Binding remains tight and intact. Free of known marginalia. Good despite minor aesthetic issues. Please see photos. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American author, naturalist, abolitionist, and philosopher. Thoreau is best-known for his poems and essays. Many of his writings interweave themes of nature and philosophy. This book contains reprints of Thoreau’s correspondence with titular “various persons.” The latter part of the book contains poems by Thoreay, beginning on 211 pp. Edited by Emerson. 1st edition, BAL “A”.

Referenced in the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL), no. 20116: Binding "A." Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Spine is sunned. The head and tail of spine are chipped. There is a split measuring about 2" along the front joint. An unworn, Very Good copy. Publisher's brown cloth, with wreath illustrations stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt, and brown coated endpapers. Near fine, with light toning to spine and bottom margin of front board, light wear to spine ends, some ink staining to verso of front free endpaper, and text outlined in ink on pp. 74-77. Overall, a sturdy and attractive copy. BAL 20116. Letters to Various Persons is Thoreau's sixth book and the fourth to be published posthumously. Specifically, it is a collection of Thoreau's letters to his friends, written from 1840-1862. As Emerson notes in his preface, "Nearly all the letters have been printed directly from the original autographs furnished by the persons to whom they were addressed" and clarifies that "the letters have been printed as they stood, with very few verbal corrections." Additionally, Letters contains nine poems, including "Sympathy," "Mountains," "Smoke," "Smoke in Winter," and "Haze," among others.
