Description: New edition, 1766. Three volume set with index at the end of volume three. From the library of Lord Raglan with two of his bookplates in each volume. Earlier bookplate in volume one from the library of William Lygon Esq. Some light foxing at the beginning and end of each volume. Contemporary full tan calf with raised bands. Hinges slightly cracked, boards still firmly attached. Top and bottoms of spines rubbed and frayed. Corners bumped and frayed. Green leather titling labels rubbed. Small labels for volume numbers, two of which are missing. Volume one has 396 pages, volume two has 415 pages and volume three has 419 pages. Still a firm solid set.

Description: Letters, Written by the Late Jonathan Swift, D. D. Dean of St. Patrick’s, Dublin, and Several of His Friends. From the year 1703 to 1740. Published from the Originals; with Notes Explanatory and Historical, By John Hawkesworth, L. L. D. In Three Volumes. A New Edition., T. Davies, 1766, Vol. I-III, uniformly 8.5 x 6”, 8vos. In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing to edges and corners. Joints tender with splitting and desiccation. Spine labels replaced with modern morocco leather. Spines abraded overall with splitting down center from poor bindings. Bindings nearly split in each volume. Slight loss of heads and tails on each volume. Inscription of Richard Hely-Hutchinson, 1st Earl of Donoughmore (1756-1825) on pastedowns. “Guilielmus Irby donuna Richard Hutchinson Scholae Etonensis Nov. 4th, 1766”. This was gift inscription written by George Irby (1734-1802) when the Earl was ten while a student at Eton. Bookplates of The Honorable William Irby (1750-1830) on pastedowns. Minor offsetting from bookplates on flys. Internally good with light toning and minor instances of foxing. Speckled edges. Please see photos.

Collation, xxxii,396pp, viii,388pp, viii,419pp, viii,400pp. Bound in full period mottled calf, raised bands, gilt lines. Calf rubbed on edges, some minor wear loss, light crack along spine on volume four. Generally bindings in very good clean condition. Internally, pages clean. A very nice set, in attractive period bindings. Size: 8vo
