Un poète, romancier, journaliste et essayiste français. Il est également connu pour son engagement et son soutien au Parti communiste français de 1930 jusqu'à sa mort. Avec André Breton, Paul Éluard, Philippe Soupault, il fut l'un des animateurs du dadaïsme parisien et du surréalisme. Sa poésie est largement inspirée, depuis les années 1940, par l'amour qu'il voue à son épouse, Elsa Triolet, écrivain elle aussi, et belle-sur de Vladimir Maïakovski. Louis Aragon [1897 - 1982] French poet, novelist & editor. Having been involved in Dadaism from 1919 to 1924, he became a founding member of Surrealism in 1924, with André Breton & Philippe Soupault under the pen-name "Aragon". In 1939 he married Russian-born author Elsa Triolet, the sister of Lilya Brik, a mistress & common-law wife of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. He had met her in 1928, and she became his muse starting in the 1940s. Aragon and Triolet collaborated in the left-wing French media before and during World War II, going underground for most of the Nazi occupation. Louis Aragon wrote poems under the name of Le Musée Grévin (using the pseudonym of François la Colère), published during the Vichy regime by the Éditions de Minuit underground editor. A rare publication.

Description: First edition, a numbered copy on vergé paper. Bound by Joanne Sonnichsen, a coptic-style binding, utilizing the most ancient structure as an experimental modern binding, with her own paste-paper boards, the bottom edges strengthened with leather strips, onlays of dyed vellum, top edge sprinkled, decorated paper endsheets, clamshell box. The binding was made for an exhibition at the Museé de la Reliure in Granville (France) in 1997. The binder's article about her experiments with the coptic structure, "Playing with Structure: A 4th-Century Form for a 20th-Century Binding,"appeared in Bookways: A Quarterly for the Book Arts, Nos. 13 & 14, October 1994-January 1995, pp. 70-72.

Description: 8vo. French manuscript in blue ink on green paper. 1 p. Important manuscript for the poem "Ramage" ("Bird song") that was originally published in the famous 1944 anthology "L'Honneur des poètes II: Europe" as a purported French translation of an anonymous Dutch poem, but has since been identified as a poem by Éluard (see Scheler, p. 323, note 1). The short poem that consists of three stanzas of varying length and free metre sets an optimistic tone in the face of danger and destruction, asserting that "Our children will be saved" and cursing anyone "who does not know | That the world is not hell!" (transl.). The poem in full: "Entre tous, toi, | Mon beau pays, | Tu es celui qui mûrit | Et qui prospère, | Entre le ciel et la mer, | Comme un fruit entre le ciel, | Et l'appétit des enfants. | Nos enfants seront sauvés, | avec eux la vie grandit, | Je vois loin et je découvre | Les limites de la terre. | Terre moirée, irisée, | Gaie comme un coq | Et tendre comme un fruit ! | Malheur à qui y mordra ! | Malheur à qui ne sait pas | Que la terre n'est pas l'Enfer !" - The intention behind Paul Éluard's and Jean Lescure's publication of "L'Honneur des poètes II: Europe" in May 1944 was both to oppose the fascist occupation of Europe and "the rise of nationalism in the ranks of the resistance poets themselves" (Lombez, p. 2). Éluard operated undercover in the Lozère region while preparing the anthology. As finding and contacting foreign poets who would contribute new works proved too difficult under these circumstances, Éluard inserted several pseudotranslations such as "Ramage". At the time, the anthology did not have the same impact as the first collection of oppositional poems published under the same title in July 1943. This was probably due to the rapidly changing circumstances following the Allied landing in Normandy on 6 June 1944. - The manuscript at hand is the final version with several corrections. Written in parentheses below the poem: "Traduit du néerlandais". - With collector's notes in pencil.
