Ex library copy with associated labels, inserts, stamps and annotations. Pages remain bright and clean with minimal tanning and foxing. Binding remains firm. Slight thumb marking in places. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners and crushing, fraying and tearing to spine ends and edges. All surfaces heavily tanned, particularly spine. Some additional heavy rubbing and staining. Gilt is strongly dulled.

Nice looking red leather binding with red marbled covers. Chipping to the leather at the base of the spine and at the base of both covers, rubbing and a bit of fading on the spine. The hinges are in good order. The text and plates are complete, browning to the tissue guards in vol 1- the plates are a bit toned because of it, brighter plates in the 2nd volume, light foxing in places, toning to the pages, previous owners signature at the top margin of the 1st title page.

Thomas (all present as called for). With the following issue points: Misprint "Crawley" instead of "Toogood" on p.298 of volume 2, and with "the right of translation is reserved" on verso of titles in both volumes. Provenance: with the bookplate of the poet and author I. Henry Wallis on front pastedown. Professionally carried out repairs to cracked joints with matching red cloth strengthening to inner hinges. Description: London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1867. These are Very Good (Minus) copies of the First Edition. Original blue cloth binding with decorative gilt stamping on the front cover and spine. Illustrations by George H. Thomas. Clean texts; both volumes 384 pages (no adverts). Contemporary POS on the FFEPs. The text is very bright and clear, but pages are stiff to turn. Some darkening of the spine and around the margins, but not raffecting the gilt. The corners are bumped, and both volumes are slightly cocked; Volume One has a bump on the bottom of the front cover; both have splits at the spine corners just starting. In an unsophisticated condition, and showing their wear; Quercus suggests these as good candidates for a bit of restoration. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. In original blue publisher's cloth, decorated in gilt on spine and front boards; plain endpapers; I: [4], 384 pp., II: [4], 384 pp; 64 illustrations, including 16 inserted plates and 16 in-text wood engravings in each volume. Internally clean and complete apart from the absence of the final ad leaf (which Sadleir writes is 'irregular in its appearance'), but both volumes rubbed, cloth somewhat stained, hinges in vol. I cracking but holding, corners reinforced on both volumes and vol. II neatly rebacked: a Good or better copy. Bookplate of W[illiam] D[alziel] MacKenzie of Fawley Court, the nephew of civil engineer and railway builder William MacKenzie, in both volumes. This conclusion to Trollope's Barsetshire series, illustrated by George H. Thomas, was originally issued in parts, with the first book issue bound up from copies in wrappers. Sadleir writes that the first and second issues in bound form can be distinguished only by the presence of stab holes; this copy shows stab holes in gatherings D and E of vol. I but not elsewhere. It has the points of first edition, including "The right of Translation is reserved" on title page versos, perfect 'D' on p.157, vol. I, and "Crawley" on p.298, vol. II. SADLEIR (Trollope) 26.
