Description: Excess postage required due to weight; Large 4to hardback; olive green cloth with gold gilt illustration to cover and lettering to upper panel; also gold gilt lettering to spine; wear to cover corners; no handwriting inside such as names; nice clean copy throughout.1st tissue guard has a small piece torn off and some browning; a plethora of illustrations throughout in cream and black; the stories and illustrations in the book originally appeared in 'Little folks' between 1896 - 1902; the publishers felt that some of the drawings deserved a longer life and better presentation than in a magezine, and asked Arthur Rackham to collect them for this book. The result is quite magical. The book comes in a matching slipcase, which is strange as the book was not issue in a slipcase, so we can only assume that someone at some point made or bought a slipcase to keep the book in for protection. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall

Arthur Rackham was one of the great illustrators of the early 20th century, a period which is referred to as the "golden age" in British book design. His works were produced in both limited and mass market editions as there was a large market for ornately illustrated books before the First World War. Rackham used a unique style, thought to mix European and East Asian influences, that involved both pen and India Ink as well as watercolor. His work was displayed all over Europe - and received awards at International Exhibitions in Milan and Barcelona and Rackham would influence heavily many illustrators, especially those of children's books, who came after him.
