Description: These two volumes give a fascinating account of the journeys of Lady Charlotte Schreiber in her indefatigable search for ceramics and fans over 16 years in the late 19th Century. Both the collections she formed are now in the British Museum. Lady Charlotte was a remarkable woman. She was at first married to Sir John Guest, who owned the steel works at Dowlais, and when he died she continued to run the business. She also taught herself sufficient Welsh to make the first translation of the Mabinogion into English. She then married her son's young tutor, Charles Schreiber, and it was with him that she travelled the continent collecting. Each volume runs to over 500 pages, and the complete work is illustrated by over 100 plates, including eight in colour and one in photogravure. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown of Volume 1. This set is in very good condition: firm, and with very little bumping. Images on front covers very clean; figures on spine slightly worn, as usual. The books are heavy, and postage will be charged at cost.
