Im selben Jahr und 1955 erschienen auch Ausgaben in der Guilde du Livre in Lausanne. - "When Doisneau began to photograph the suburbs of Gentilly and Montrouge, they were still the though but spirited working-class communities celebrated in the poetic-realist films of Julien Duvivier and Marcel Carné. But Doisneau caught them just as they were about to change and expand beyond recognition, making this book a valuable document that looks unsentimentally yet affectionately at a popular idea of the French working-class. There are hints of the changes to come, most notably on the book's cover, which is montage of the Eiffel Tower combined with one of the barrack-like apartment blocks that were to spring up all round Paris. Socially too, the suburbs were about to change, with new cultures and new communities being absorbed (or not) into the urban wasteland that architects, planners and politicians created from the 1960s onwards" (Parr/Badger). - "Kommerziell war "La banlieue de Paris" kein Erfolg. . Ses lignes sont dominées par un regard désabusé sur un "monde fadé" et ses "paquets de grands immeubles en redan construits avec un matériau préfabriqué qui ressemble à du carton-pâte ou à du papier mâché (j'entends bien du papier hygiénique mâché après usage!)." Le regard de Doisneau, alors encore peu connu, lui permet de tempérer ses sentiments : "les photos terre à terre de Robert Doisneau, qui ne cligne jamais des yeux, me rappellent à l'ordre. Il ne faut pas exagérer. La réalité suffit. Il ne faut pas en 'rajouter'". La célèbre édition de Seghers a été publiée en collaboration avec la Guilde du Livre de Lausanne ; l'éditeur parisien disposa de 3000 exemplaires, sur les 7000 qui furent mis en vente en octobre 1949, et les dota pour le marché français d'une page de titre et, surtout, d'une jaquette : les exemplaires de l'édition Seghers qui ont conservé leur jaquette sont très recherchés. Restauration discrète et soignée de la jaquette.

With a near fine example of the panoramically-illustrated jacket, showing only minor rubbing. Housed in quarter-leather slipcase with pull-tab chemise.

A solid copy to boot of the 1949 1st edition, in its uncommon pictorial dustjacket. Tight and VG (light soiling at the panels and along the spine) in a bright, VG to VG+ dustjacket, with light chipping at several spots along the spine. Still though, attractive and very presentable. Octavo, 130 first-rate Doisneau heliogravures. Widely considered Doisneau's finest work, cited by both Andrew Roth and Martin Parr for its brilliant look at the suburbs ("La Banlieue") of Paris.
