Description: Early letters from the young author, mostly from New Orleans, mostly to Henry Watkin, but a few to an unknown "Lady" from 1876, while Hearn was still in Cincinnati. Watkin was a printer in Cincinnati who befriended Hearn when he arrived there, penniless, helping him find work; Hearn remained in contact with him for years, calling him Old Man or Old Dad and often signing himself with just a sketch of a raven. Small hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, corners & one edge bumped; jacket shows short tears, creases, minor chipping, light rubbing & minor stains; many pages unopened (that is, the fore-edge has not been trimmed, leaving the original folds of the gatherings of some sections intact; others have been rather crudely opened, leaving ragged edges & tears). Text clean; 201 pages, drawings by Hearn. Laid in is the calling card of one Richard Alexander Douglas with a gift note on it. Size: Duodecimo
