Condition: Very Good

Description: Second impression of the first UK edition, published in May 1951, the first impression coming out the previous month. The book was originally published in the USA by Random House in 1949. Colour dustwrapper design by Lynton Lamb. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Gilt still quite bright. Very light sporadic foxing to the page block edges. Top edge of text block slightly marked. Fore-edge of textblock has a slight abrasion. Top and tail of spine slightly bumped. Corners sharp. Spine tight with just a couple of small indentations. ***In a good price-clipped second impression dustwrapper, designed by Lynton Lamb. Please note there is a chip out of the centre of the spine, and some loss at the head of the spine. Extremities of dustwrapper rubbed, nicked and creased, with some disclouration to the back panel. [see scans] ***205 mm x140 mm. 218 pages. ***As well as the title story, the book includes five other stories as follows: "Smoke", "Monk", "Hand Upon the Waters", "Tomorrow", and "An Error in Chemistry". ***'Honesty of purpose and an intense vitality of narration distinguish these tales, in which there is nothing of tragedy. There is a spark of honour, says Mr. Faulkner, in almost all men; it is the task of justice, not merely to shield it, but to fan it to an irradiating flame. Such a conclusion, reached with simple directness, led Malcolm Cowley to write of 'Knight's Gambit' that "for those who have never read his work it offers perhaps the easiest door by which to enter the rich world of his imagination.'' (Quote taken from back panel of dustwrapper). ***William Faulkner was the Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949, the year of publication in the USA. ***A second impression of the first UK edition, complete in the original dustwrapper designed by Lynton Lamb. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
