Description: Maroon pictorial cloth, spine and front cover designed in black and lettered in gilt. Back cover designed in black. Frontispiece, folding map and 7 inserted plates by Walter Paget. Publisher's catalogue at back. Inner front hinge cracked, with some yellowed glue residue; cloth marked along front hinge and cover. A very good copy generally.

Brown wraps decorated and lettered in red and black; measures approximately 7" X 5". Unlike the 1st printing, this printing is illustrated with frontispiece, map, chapter head, and numerous full page illustrations. New York: Cassell and Company (1888), 320 pages + ads at rear. Good. Wraps darkened, edge wear, spine panel missing piece at heel. Back cover and final ad page have been torn and missing a part along top edge. Unmarked interior has tan pages.

Very Good. Repair to head of spine and inner hinges. Cloth at spine darkened with stamping rubbed. Corners softened. Foxing to endsheets, pages toned. Map intact, with small tear and several small spots. One of the prolific author's best-known works.
