Description: FROM SEA TO SEA and Other Sketches, Letters of Travel. Volumes One and Two. Rudyard Kipling. Macmillan & Co, London 1901 First Edition second impressionVol One 498pp + 2pp Adverts and Vol Two 438 + 2pp Adverts Hardbacks This two-volume collection consists of special letters and articles written by Kipling for his newspapers between 1887 and 1889. His 'Preface', printed in Volume I, explains why the collection was published: "In these two volumes I have got together the bulk of the special correspondence and occasional articles written by me for the 'Civil and Military Gazette' and the 'Pioneer' between 1887-89. I have been forced to this action by the enterprise of various publishers who, not content with disinterring old newspaper work from the decent seclusion of the office files, have in several instances seen fit to embellish it with additions and interpolations" .The two volumes were first published in their entirety in America in 1899, and in England in 1900. Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was an English poet, short-story writer, and novelist chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism, tales and poems of British soldiers in India, and his tales for children. Kipling received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling is best known for his works of fiction, including The Jungle Book (1894) (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi"), Kim (1901) (a tale of adventure), many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888); and his poems, including Mandalay (1890), Gunga Din (1890), The White Man's Burden (1899) and If— (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; and his best works are said to exhibit a versatile and luminous narrative gift. These copies are first editions in FINE condition bound in original red linen covered boards with gilt ganesh device to the front boards and gilt titling to the spines. Publisher's advertisements at back of book.** PS2024.0124** 413 pages. 5.25 x 7.75 inches** Very good copy of the first edition of Rudyard Kipling's picaresque novel, which originally appeared in serial format. Kipling (1865-1936) lived in British India, and his novel featuring the orphan Kim is filled with details of life in India at the end of the 19th century.** With regard to the swastika depicted on the cover medallion and the verso of the half title page: in Sanskrit the word means “fortunate” or “well-being.” Kipling’s introduction to the swastika as an Hindu good luck symbol would have come through his father’s encyclopaedic knowledge of Indian art. Kipling also knew that the Hindu trader opens his annual account-book with a swastika in order to ensure an auspicious beginning.** The extraordinary feature of the use of the symbol by Kipling’s publishers was that there was no uniformity in whether the right turn or left turn was used. Frequently on introductory pages the ‘left’ is used, while on the ‘Ganesha roundel’ there is always a small ‘right’ swastika between the elephant’s forehead and the circle enclosing it. Ganesha, the most immediately recognisable of Kipling’s “logos” shows the elephant headed God, symbol of wisdom and foresight. Shown with his trunk down and curled to indicate good fortune, Ganesha holds in his trunk a lotus flower, also associated with good health and good fortune.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. Kipling, Rudyard. KIM. , 1901.

Price: US$395.00 + shipping

Description: London: Macmillan and Co., 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" [CGEL]. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman, becomes a disciple to a Lama, and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling, the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier (though in the same month as the English one). As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan, the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika (the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s, when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning). This is a very good copy (front endpaper slightly cracked at the gutter, light speckling of the cloth plus one small stain on the rear cover; as always, there is some foxing of the endpapers and of the frontispiece tissue guard, and there is minor rubbing of the gilt elephant). Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century.

The story is set between the Second and Third Afghan Wars so between 1893 and 1898. Roger Sale describes the work: "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood, but it shines now as bright as ever, long after the Empire's collapse." Since being published, Kim has been adapted into several films, inspired authors and been directly referenced in several pieces of literature, as well as having a town named after it.

Price: US$935.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. Illustrated with 10 plates in black and white on coated paper from bas-reliefs by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling. 8vo, in the publisher’s original ‘Kipling’ red cloth with gilt embossed elephant on the upper cover, gilt lettered on the spine, t.e.g. 413, [2 ads] pp. A very bright and attractive copy, internally both the text and the plates are very fresh and clean and fine, endleaves a slight touch mellowed as usual. The red cloth of the binding has no fading to the spine, which is uncommon, and has just a little minor mottling to the boards, in all still very attractive. A VERY FRESH AND BRIGHT COPY OF THIS KIPLING CLASSIC, the picaresque novel of India, generally considered Kipling’s masterpiece and one of his most popular works. Kipling was born in Bombay, grew up in London and traveled throughout the world. "Widely regarded as unofficial poet laureate, he refused many honours; in 1907 he was the first English writer to receive the Nobel Prize" [Oxf Comp to Eng Lit]. Kipling was popular with common soldiers and his phrase, "the white man’s burden" influenced and was used to justify the period of neo-colonialism up until the second World War. While he was and remains a controversial figure, his children’s books do not have this quality and are considered some of his greatest achievements. KIM, of course, is considered the greatest representation of his talents and is considered by many to be Kipling"s greatest work of all.

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition of this epic novel of the colonial Great Game, one of Kipling's most beloved works. The Central Asian conflict between the British Empire and the Russian Empire serve as the backdrop for this epic picaresque, following the life of the orphaned white British boy KIM's adventures in colonial India. Rudyard Kipling's own time in India deeply informed the themes of KIM, exploring issues of cultural assimilation and spirituality while remaining accessible to younger readers. Critical readings of KIM contextualize it within the larger ecology of British colonialist writing of the early 20th century: the novel demonstrates "one of the key methods by which Western superiority over the Orient was asserted and maintained. [it] is represented as something which can be collected and catalogued, almost as if it were a British possession" (Scott, 178-9). The US edition technically precedes this by a couple of weeks for the purpose of securing copyright. An important work of literature and of the history of Western colonialism. 8'' x 5''. Original red cloth binding with gilt roundel to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Top edge gilt. Black-and-white frontispiece with tissue guard, nine black-and-white plates. 414 pages with [2] pages of ads to rear. Ownership inscription of George Fitzgerald dated "Xmas 1901" to second blank. Mild rubbing to edges of spine, light bumping to spine ends. Tiny closed tear to gutter of front flyleaf. Clean and bright.

Description: Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and front board. Top edge gilt. A Near Fine example retaining its brightness and shape; internally with some foxing to title page and preliminaries. Kim stands as a separate character from the other books that had made Kipling's name -- "'Not much of a story' may perhaps be the verdict of the ruthless boy reader who revels in the Jungle Book and Captains Courageous.Kim is, in fact and upon the surface, but an insignificant fragment of human history; a bit out of the biography of a little vagabond of Irish parentage, orphaned when a baby, and left to shift for himself in infinite India," wrote a contemporary reviewer for The Atlantic. That said, it is a book that more mature readers could connect with in the story of a boy growing into manhood, seeking out experiences and relationships to shape and define him. "Kim is a work of genius," that same Atlantic reviewer concludes, because it is "the most truly spiritual production, in the proper sense of the term," giving thoughtful readers "something upon every page which he desires to quote." Description: First English edition of what many consider Kipling’s masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Illustrated with photographs of clay reliefs by John Lockwood Kipling including tissue-guarded frontispiece, two pages of advertisements at rear. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game, the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881, but before the Third, probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people, culture, and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India, its teeming populations, religions, and superstitions, and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece, opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale, in his history of children's literature, concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood, but it shines now as bright as ever, long after the Empire's collapse." It was the basis for the 1950 film starring Errol Flynn, Dean Stockwell, and Paul Lukas. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel."

Kipling, Rudyard. KIM. , 1901.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Description: [in 1901 dust jacket] London: Macmillan and Co., 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt, with dust jacket. This volume is in bright, just-about-fine condition (just a touch of wear at the head of the spine). Included is the quite scarce 1901 dust jacket, in its first state (listing on the rear panel 14 titles in the Uniform Edition, with THE NAULAHKA at the bottom and with KIM at the top with no statement of print number). The jacket is in good-to-very good condition (spine quite darkened so as to be illegible, wear particularly at the ends of the jacket's spine). Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century, seldom seen in jacket.
